Amazon to pay customers for info on purchases made at other retailers

I came across this article today about Amazon's new "Amazon Shopper Panel" where they are paying users to send them their shopping reciepts from non Amazon stores.

My thoughts

  Don't they already have the "Amazon Basics" line where they take the popular items bought on their store and make a cheaper version themselves to sell? is this not seeing what items are bought from other stores and then doing this to it as well? How is this not a monopoly ploy?

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

Amazon is trying to monopolise the market. I agree

A monopoly has nothing to do with what you sell or how much you sell it for, you become a monopoly when you're the only one left in the market. Trying to beat your opponents prices is not monopolistic in of itself, trying to force your opponents out of business by making yourself the only viable option is.

I guess the bigger issue is where should the line on data collection be drawn? I feel like if Amazon tried to go contact their competition to ask for said data, they would tell them to F off but now they can pay pennies for ppl to willingly give them a way to undermine their competition? just seems like a huge anti-trust issue to me

Having a store brand is not monopolizing, its a common thing to have. Some people prefer to buy store brands.

 

As for Amazon's business practices, yes I agree they are trying to monopolize the market and they might as they a pretty good business setup, thing is they can't as when they do the feds will step in so they do have to encourage competition.

how IS it? This is just amazon looking at customer analytics that literally every company does. I, a one man tiny company, even do this regularly, looking to see what people buy from other companies to help decide what I should do for my own company.

As a society, we really need to establish a formalized process by which monopolies are broken apart into competing companies. Specifically a definable when, where, how, and why. Rather than seeking to prevent monopolies in the first place.

Ketchup is better than mustard.

Yeah its almost like market research is a thing. But i guess market research is now an antitrust case lol.

Unless customers are put under an enforceable NDA, I think making an antitrust case out of purchasing customer receipts would be a rather difficult.

Oh boy are you in for a treat then. Anytime you use a credit card they sell your data to anyone for pennies on the dollar. The store also sells your data to advertisers.

Amazon should focus on making their site better instead of doing this.

  • Search sucks
  • Filters and sorting is broken
  • Sometimes the actual best match product you are looking for appears after you add to cart, not in the search results.
  • Lack of standard from third-party: putting different products within the same product, as if they are just variation of the same product, when they are completely different, duplicated images instead of showing a different one, 
  • Third-party sellers putting cards in products boxes saying that they can get a free gift for a 5 star review. Not to mention fake reviews.
  • Sponsored product that put fake "Amazon choice" or whatever tag in the product image.
  • Descriptions sucks to no descriptions at all.
  • Product comparison table many times doesn't make sense.
  • Low stock = super high prices (why bother?)
  • Product filter varies between countries. And if you try to be vague, because what you are looking for falls into 2 poorly categories filters, it only shows you up to 7 pages of results.

And that is just form the top of my head.

But they don't care, there is no competition.

Do you know what any of those words mean? Amazon is paying people to given them their information. There's nothing "anti-trust" or illegal in there. Hell, it's more ethical than most ways they gather info.
