$900 for an Xbox Series X?

elfensky

With the 9th gen consoles, if any of them cost over $700 at launch, I'm saying fuck it and replacing my dodgy GTX 1070 (if it doesn't force me onto my 7970 before then) instead of getting one.

We do not sell cosmetics. We just blind animals."

I'm using the 2080ti as a preformance stand in for a 3070. Even then, 2080tis are selling for 600 on ebay.

I could use some help with this!

That could be the "value" of the console, if you consider the fact that Microsoft and Sony will be selling these at a loss when they're launching them, as it usually happens, maybe this is the kind of price to expect if they were to actually try to make a profit? Either that, or things are just overpriced in South Africa, since if Microsoft wants their Series X to sell they wouldn't be pricing it this way.

Not really, current pricing is based on current market trends. The prices in the promotion would be the MSRP

Will they, though? What we really need are other promotions and their terms and conditions, to check whether they reflect MSRP, street price, or none.

Jissis, boet. Microsoft gooid a young poesklap with the pricing there, my china. Moerse expensive.

I doubt the launch is going to sell very well in SA if it’s going to be R13500. That’s a lot of money, especially in a struggling economy. It’ll just be a rich kid thing for a while.

That's an F in the profile pic

I doubt this price is right, but it is inevitable. People have already accepted 1000$+ phones, so it's only a matter of time before consoles cost that much IMO. Sony and Microsoft want a piece of that pie for sure, suddenly doubling the price might not be the move this gen, but it won't surprise me to see expensive "pro" models.

While I don't want this to happen, it would be really funny to watch console fanboys suddenly defend that pricing after whining for years about how expensive PC gaming is. Y'know, like when Nintendo fanboys used to knock the PS4 and XBO for having paid online, then the Switch came out with paid online and suddenly it was okay! hahahaha

This is such a tired argument though, totally ignoring that these people just pay them off with 30-50 bucks per month.

Also not comparable phones are status symbols, consoles are toys.

They seem to have accepted $1000 phones when they are offered as part of incentive packages from wireless carriers via monthly charges. At least in my area.  Paying retail up front is much less common, or at least it seems that way.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Another pointless comparison. Completely different things. It's like saying your dishwasher is cheaper than an oven.

No it's not, because point is console be it anywhere between 500-1000 is still good for it for people that play on them, yet people discuss will it be 100 more or less, like it's some big deal. Console lasting like for years and years while phones well it seema people change them yearly or after 2-3y because. Value from a phone is quite lower.

Not sure I agree with the “because” bit.  The because on That one seems somewhat open atm.   The rest seems accurate to me though.

Was just trying to point out how phones went from 500 to 2k flagships and people cgange them so often. Yet I see media yell about if a console ma cost 100 more than expected oh nooooo. Laughable.

Same goes for consoles and other big ticket items, at least in developing countries. People buy them in installments.

$900 seems awfully steep.  But you know what, if MS could say "the XBOX Series X comes with a lite version of Windows, can run Steam, Word, Excel, Chrome, and can generally behave as an all-in-one desktop experience", could communicate with other PCs and other Series X over Wifi, could stream to and from other devices around the house....it would fly off the shelves.  Hell I might buy two

Usable Keyboard and mouse would be needed for that.   There seems so far to be extreme aversion to useful keyboard and mouse stuff.  This is my main problem with consoles. I dislike controllers.

Which I believe PS4 and XBOX 1S have compatability for already, no?  (My last console was PS2 so I'm a bit out of the loop).  If they advertized it hard and merged XBOX with the PC marketshare in a compact package that can be moved from living room to desktop as needed, ooof that could be spicy

There is kbm/mouse support on consoles, but RN, but it has high latency.

Maybe - just maybe - there's a reason MS and Sony have been so reluctant to release pricing information...

Which there is no particularly good reason for, thus my point.  There are other problems too.  It seems they only sort of work.  They feel like check box markers, much like windows being “Unix compliant” it technically is.  Just not in a really useful way for a lot of things.

Very good counterpoints, they make sense, but it will likely end up happening. Even if it's inflation that ends up causing it. Give it a couple more generations. We already had Sony try 600 bucks 15 years ago. Adjusting for inflation, that's 800 bucks.
