Microsoft wont be able to bring xCloud streaming to iOS users after Apple blocks the app.

Summary

Apple has blocked Microsoft from putting xCloud streaming service on the Apple app Store, making it the only general purpose platform to do so. Apple claims the restriction is to do with games normally needing to be submitted for review individually.

My thoughts

This seems like the arbitrary reasons Apple used to come up with to block Youtube working on iOS because it wanted people to buy videos from iTunes. Clearly other streaming services exist for movies like Netflix, Hulu etc, but the content on those is not individually vetted or approved by Apple.

 

The claim that each game needs to be individually searchable etc on the App store would also just not make sense given that many of the games on offer would not run natively on iOS or are beyond the scope of a mobile device. It also fundamentally ignores what the service is offering, which wouldn't relate to games sales charts etc since the games are all part of the one price.

 

People are not stupid and would understand what they're signing up for.

 

I have to also wonder given other companies recent gripes with Apple demanding 30% cut even of recurring subscriptions for which they don't provide any service (Floatplane), if this may be another reason for Apple's hard stance.

It’ll be Microsoft wanting special terms and rates for subscription terms. Tbh I don’t really care game streaming isn’t exactly great even on a wired connection.

The question is would streaming something specifically designed to compromise Apple security make an intrusion possible?  I don’t know the answer.  I suspect Apple doesn’t either.  It may be that Apple is just saying no until proven otherwise.  Apple did eventually alllow Netflix.  It did take a while though.  At issue is apple’s reasoning.  An accusation is being made that the reason for delay or denial is a customer abuse issue.  Apple is going to have to do a bunch of work to see if such a thing can be done either way now. If it turns out it can’t. Microsoft isn’t going to be the only one with streaming on iPhone. If it turns out it can it will be doable and possibly easier on other devices as well and streaming in general is going to die.  Streaming is the new thing, and Apple is undoubtedly also working on a streaming service.  If it turns out it can Apple may be the only company even capable of producing a safe streaming service for gaming.  

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

No the "dumb" restrictions aren't just for fun the reason they have them is for security purposes. I don't agree with all of them either but it's a trade off I guess for better security

I'd get the next iPhone for its 5.4" screen but Apple keeps shooting itself in the leg repeatedly. I can't run two separate Discord clients on iOS, there are no decent apps for obscure chatting protocols like Jabber or IRC, no real way to work with files, and now they're blocking cloud gaming (with Parsec not being available and xCloud having just been denied from AppStore). I guess I'll give my money to someone else then!

This strikes me as something Apple will eventually change (at least with enough pressure) -- it's just that its current policies aren't designed to accommodate this.

 

Remember, the company just this summer introduced a system where developers will get to formally challenge the App Store's rules without having to go to the press (which is probably what Apple wants to avoid). The company's changing, but it does need prodding sometimes.

To be fair, weren’t Congress accusing Apple of treating developers differently? So if they would have allowed this streaming service, then the same rules wouldn’t apply to every developer and therefore Apple would actually be treating developers differently right? Still think Apple should change their policy a bit...

There is a lot of things they do right, but the App Store is one of those that they got wrong. I appreciate the security, however there has to be a limit. Too much security isn't always better. In fact it could do more harm than good.

I think this falls back to the entire idea/problem that Stadia has on iOS as well. The iOS app only lets you launch things... on other devices.

 

Like it's one thing to run the game on the local device, potentially introducing security problems, but another if Apple is requiring every game to be reviewed, which they clearly can't do. How does that make it any different from Netflix or Amazon's Comixology?

Also their Arcade sucks and Stadia and Geforce Now will have a really really hard time to really take of so there's no Game Streaming Service on the App Store anymore that can be considered good IMO. LMAO. Never buy a Apple Product if you're sane and not already in the damn ecosystem !

Conclusions vs observations. Could cost customers. Arcade may suck.  I don’t use it.  That’s phone/tablet only isnt it?  Stadia is looking like it will die.  I thought GeForce now was doing well.  I might be wrong about that.  It’s definitely smaller than the Microsoft store. 
No decent streaming for Apple yes.  Not buying an Apple product though?... does not follow.  Does if one wants streaming right now though.  I do think Apple could be in trouble without decent streaming.  They’re claiming a safety issue.  Could be real could be BS.  I give them several months to determine if there is a safety issue or not.  If there isn’t they need to quickly figure a way around it.  If there is they need to quickly find a way to do it safely.  Either way they’re on the clock.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.
