The FaceTime bug is really stupid, but I can understand the outrage by Apple given that Facebook and Google abused internal testing system to deliver apps to end users, bypassing verification procedure. Because if it went through verification, it most probably wouldn't be certified.

The issue here is that Enterprise certificate can be only used within the company, because it gives the app root access (AFAIK). So a company using an Enterprise certificate for a public app is inherently wrong. They can still release their software on the platform freely, but they'll have to keep these kind of apps internally if they want the certificate again. 

I see no problem with this at all. It's not like Apple removed their public apps from their app store

That's not the question here, both Google and Facebook were abusing internally provided development and access environment to deliver content to end users, which is a violation of how app store works. And yes, in this case, Apple is able to dictate how something gets released.

 

I've had a lot of issues how app stores dealt with censorship of Gab social network blaming it to be racist and whatnot solely based on their refusal to just generally censor people for what they say. Here, it's a different thing. They were abusing the provided system for unintended purposes.

 

No one says you can't write an app for iOS. You just can't release it on Apple App Store ( I don't know if iOS allows manual installation of apps from 3rd party sources). Same was with Gab on Android. Google banned them. But that didn't stop them from writing and releasing it on their site. You need to install it manually, but it works. Same way Microsoft doesn't dictate what you can write for Windows. They might not release it on Microsoft Store, but you can release it on your webpage or whatever and it'll still work.

If you don't release it on the Apple App Store, you can't install it (which is I believe the point that moose was trying to make).

 

The only real way to avoid the App Store is through using an exploit, or essentially what Facebook and Google did.  To be honest, it was informed consent and while it was against the TOS, Apple I think also has restricted the iPhone too much

Removing malware or something that violates their ToS I can agree with (which is all that's happening so far).

 

Removing an app because it harvests data (with the users' explicit consent) I don't agree with. Although the latter hasn't come up as far as I know, so it's a moot point.

It is the question here,  You can try and split hairs about enterprise versions all you like, but the end result is apple dictating what software runs on a device they don't own.

Seems like a pretty clear cut case to me. Facebook and Google broke the Apple Developer TOS and got their enterprise profile revoked.

 

Just to clear things up, if you are an apple developer you have access to a few profiles to use for development. For engineers, you have to whitelist your test device's UDID to the development profile to build directly onto the device. Obviously, for internal testing, this doesn't quite work if you have a large company because you'd have to add every device individually. To mitigate this, the enterprise profile is used (and is what Facebook and Google are using to sideload), which allows your app to install on any device with the profile, with the only restriction being it only being used for internal testing. The last type of profile is the distribution profile, which cannot be installed on any device, but is used for submission for app review. (There's a fourth ad-hoc profile that also requires a whitelist of UDIDs, but is used for final testing for QA, as it's considered to be as close to production as is possible without being a production build.)

 

These apps were never meant to be distributed outside of the company, and doing so is a breach of TOS. It doesn't matter what the app actually is, the distribution method that Facebook and Google used is not allowed. Facebook could have released a completely harmless app this way, and if Apple found out, they'd do the same thing (of course, a harmless app is less likely to draw attention to itself).

Apple is dictating what software can be published on the App Store. An online marketplace which they entirely own.

As I said before, this is no different from what Siri does. In fact, Siri doesn't even pay you. I guess disclosure and the ability to turn it off are only good enough as excuses when Apple uses them.

Basically the enterprise cert is only allowable for internal use. According to terms and services. Why? I assume its because the normal cert requires the app to be registered (and for PR optics obviously google and FB don't really want to register with the app store small scale tests like this).

 

In any event, yes I agree it's probably mainly a wrist slap PR thing. Privacy doesnt have anything to do with this one. Also Apple Maps is trash.

I’ve never had a problem with it. It’s got a way better interface than Google Maps imo as well. And the maps look better too. Especially the recent enhancements

But when the only place you can install apps to iOS (without jailbreaking) is the App Store where Apple dictates what apps get in. It's 100% the same as Windows 10S and in the end Apple dictates what software someone can use on a device Apple doesn't own.

Exactly, everyone criticized Windows 10S for dictating what apps you can install that Microsoft doesn't own, yet most are supportive of apple doing the same under the excuse of security.
