What did you have your voltage set to before, vs now? If there was no other change other than an overclock profile being disabled, the voltages might be higher somehow.

Depends on alot of things. If you don't care about overclocking or fan noise, get the founders edition. If you want good overclocking room, get a more expensive Strix or FTW3. The differences between most 1080ti's are within margin of error so go with the one that you like the most and cools the best.

Pretty much all of them will perform the same, just buy what you can afford from a reputable brand like asus, evga, gigabyte, etc.

Jay Deah got a reaction from Jtalk4456 in Server Form Factors
I’m a heavy user of hp blades (c7000) and they definately ave their use cases, but when they came out 10 years ago in a previous-virtualisation world they were definately far more relevant. They were invented at a time where VMs were rare and it was common to have 1 server per server so blades offered a very flexible platform for management. Nowadays the only reason we keep using them is that we already own the kit and it makes more sense to stick with the platform but if we were buying all new from scratch then we’d be looking at either standard boxes like dl360/380 or switching to hyperconverged which is the new cool kid on the block. These are very similar to how blades work in concept where you take a single box and pack it full of compute and storage modules then scale vertically with more boxes and more nodes.

the biggest gotcha with racks I’ve had is on the depth. You always seem to get in a situation where you rack is either not deep enough or too deep to fit the rails of some obscure bit of kit you end up buying and it can be a royal PITA dealing with that. Best thing I ever got on some new racks is rails that can be adjusted in-situ even with equipment loaded. It needs some big burley lads to move the buggers but it’s saved me huge outages !

You're paying for the service, not the product. If you don't think the service is worth the cost of the processor, then don't indulge in it.

I know loads of people that don't want to go through the hassle, and frankly gambling to see if they'll get an awesome OC chip. Then on top of that buying the tool and going through the possibility of destroying your CPU applying liquid metal. PLUS this has a 2 year warranty? Honestly, it's not that bad of a deal at all if you're one who wants the performance without the downsides.

You know he has a legal right to require you to do something about it, right? At least, that's how it works here: when you buy something, your contract is with the entity you bought it from, not the manufacturer.

If I was your boss I would have let you go on the spot.

The fact is sometimes customer service > a small monetary loss. When you do these favors for a customer you make life long customers, but when you turn him away like you did then you not only cost yourself his business, but likely that of 2-3 other customers as well due to word of mouth.

The fact of the matter is there is very little downside for doing this and you are taking everything too personal when it is outside of your pay range. Hopefully you will learn from this and in the event that doesn't happen maybe your boss will find someone that is a better fit for this position.

You should Fresh install Windows on it if not already on an SSD, then all system core drivers and software.

DO NOT copy an HDD disk image to an SSD. SSDs are fundamentaly different in how they write files. DO NOT COPY ANY SYSTEM FILES OR APPLICATIONS. Just put Win 10 on a USB key and install Windows as if its a brand new machine with clean drives that you just put together.

Jay Deah got a reaction from Cindex in RDS CAL question
Yes you can use them anywhere you want. License terms are separate from the activation stuff. Microsoft only care that you own licenses they don’t active them properly. Every RDs deployment needs a license server running. If you want multiple RDs farms to share anlicnese server then they’re needs to be a 2 way trust between domains otherwise you need to deploy a license server each.

whenever you install RDs license server you are prompted to enter your license agreement number and then it checks to see if it’s calid. It then asks you how many cALs you want to add and you type it in freehand. If you own 5 and type in 5000 it still works.

I’d have to agree with this. Plus if the server infrastructure is recycled every few years, it creates issues with the deployment of newer hardware if they own your server, but have to replace everything to their standards.

Jay Deah reacted to Daniel644 in thermal paste AIO
I used what came on my H100i V2 when I assembled the computer initially, then when I transferred it to my new case I cleaned it all off and replaced it with Noctua NT-H1, didn't really notice any difference in day to day temps, but I haven't run a stress test to see peak temps and there where to many other variables from the case change to actually say whether the paste effected things anyway.

Do not put your vmkernel behind a virtual machine router/firewall. You need to make sure you can access the esxi host even if the VMS are down.

using a vmkernel ip on the same portgroup as a vm is fine but trying to do routing inside a VM and relying on that routing for vmkernel is an unrecoverable situation waiting to happen.

Jay Deah got a reaction from johnukguy in replacable fans for h100iv2?
Just to echo what everyone else has said. The fan curve is the only thing that will change the rev-up-down nature of the fans so changing fans won’t make any difference there.

what can be affected by better fans is the noise of the fans when they are running. The Corsair ones are on the loud side compared to others. In my system I have the Corsair unit and an EK unit (vardar fans) and the vardar stuff is so much quieter!

also fans that are more efficient will need to run slower and therefore quieter, so again better fans = quiet
