Gtx 1080 or Gtx 1080 TI

Josh2002

I'm going to be building a PC and was wondering which GPU would be the best to get in terms of future proofing the setup,

the setup would be with an i7-8700k that would be used to play most AAA games on a 1440p 144hz monitor.

Would it be best to buy a gtx 1080 or wait longer for the 11 series to come out and then buy a 1080 ti when prices come down.

I also understand that GPU prices are currently quite inflated and I am happy to wait for prices to drop.

In terms of GPUs it would be great if someone could suggest the best options for GTX 1080 and GTX 1080 ti

I am also confused as to why the 1080 Ti models have lower clock speeds compared to the 1080 models, for example,

Asus ROG STRIX GTX 1080 Ti 11G - https://www.asus.com/au/Graphics-Cards/ROG-STRIX-GTX1080TI-11G-GAMING/specifications/

Base clock - 1518 MHZ

Boost clock - 1632 MHZ

Asus ROG STRIX GTX 1080 A8G - https://www.asus.com/au/Graphics-Cards/ROG-STRIX-GTX1080-A8G-GAMING/specifications/

Base clock - 1695 MHz

Boost clock - 1835 MHz

Thanks

Definitely a 1080ti if you use 1440p 144hz

The difference between the 1080 and 1080 Ti is:

  • The amount of CUDA cores. The 1080 has 2560 and the 1080 Ti has 3584.
  • The amount of RAM. The 1080 has 8GB of GDDR5X and the 1080 Ti has 11GB of GDDR5X
  • Among other smaller things. Link for specsheet: 1080 and 1080 Ti

This all boils down to this: The 1080 Ti is better (and more expensive) than the 1080.

Please mention or quote me if you want a response. :)

whichever you buy it's getting more and more likely that new GPU's from nvidia will be available in July, with custom models available in august...so you'll likely be quickly disapointed with your purchase...

personally, that late in the game, i would wait for next gen cards.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |

Interesting, so does a higher clock speed not necessarily mean the card is better?

Also which GTX 1080 and 1080 Ti would you suggest?

Thanks

Yeah that is why I will probably be waiting till then to find out if it will be worth buying an 11 series card or if I should just buy a 10 series card

Depends on alot of things. If you don't care about overclocking or fan noise, get the founders edition. If you want good overclocking room, get a more expensive Strix or FTW3. The differences between most 1080ti's are within margin of error so go with the one that you like the most and cools the best.

Yea, there is a lot of other factors to consider.

For instance, if the 1080-1080ti want to chase the Titan cards, they usually need higher clocks to compensate for lower CUDA core/etc. Titans usually run with lower clocks achieving similar results.

EDIT: I actually based that on Maxwell Titans which had lower clocks and compared them to 1070-1080.

Pascal architecture has higher clocks in general.

Also, it may say 1632 boost clock on the 1080ti but it actually runs much faster. If the temps are right it runs about 1950-2000 on boost. It's just not guaranteed and very much temp-dependent - it will probably keep that clock 100% of the time only on water (temps not higher than 50-55c).

CPU: i7 6950X  |  Motherboard: Asus Rampage V ed. 10  |  RAM: 32 GB Corsair Dominator Platinum Special Edition 3200 MHz (CL14)  |  GPUs: 2x Asus GTX 1080ti SLI

Storage: Samsung 960 EVO 1 TB M.2 NVME  |  PSU: In Win SIV 1065W

Considering the cooling capacity/noise level the Asus ROG Strix is the best card from the aircooled ones. But you will be fine with EVGA FTW3 or MSI Gaming X as well, they are not far behind. I'd give preference to Asus unless there is a huge price difference.

That's what I was probably going to go with, what CPU cooler would you pair with this?

If you plan on overclocking, I'd suggest either some beefy aircooling like the BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4 or Noctua NH-D15. You could also look at some higher end AIO liquid cooling solution, like the NZXT Kraken X62 or the Corsair H150i Pro. There is no point in going for lower-end AIO coolers since they are not much better than aircoolers, are often louder and obviously more prone to defects that can wreck your system.

Obviously both ways heavily depend on your case - whether it supports tall aircoolers or has enough radiator space to install the AIO.

If you don't plan on overclocking then you can probably get away with something a bit smaller but I wouldn't push the luck here. It's a 6core CPU after all with TIM between the die and the heatspreader.

Ok cool, would you suggest swapping out the fans of the H150i Pro for Corsair LL120 fans or will this make the performance worse?

Thanks

I think they are a bit worse for radiators spec-wise and I wouldn't swap them even if there were no performance differences. I just don't like the aesthetics personally. But if you want to then sure, go ahead. The difference might be 3-5 degrees at maximum.

Well the news is that Huang stated that the next gen cards will not be ready until a long time from now.  Whatever that means, the late summer early fall productions are out the window.  Early 2018 I bought my 1080 Ti wanting the best card to hold me over for years and for now with no real competition Nvidia has no reason to release the 11 series.

My suggestion is if you can afford the 1080 Ti get it, it's awesome for 1440p and can do 4K 60Hz at around 60 FPS for most games.  Point being the card will give you many years of awesome performance as your other parts are swapped out.

Ok, well I was probably going to get the 1080 Ti but I was going to wait for the release of the 11 series so that the price would come down, currently prices for the 1080 Ti are very high what price do you think would be reasonable for a 1080 Ti?

Thanks

The 1080Ti will last longer than the 1080 will at 1440p144.

The concept of future proofing quickly breaks down in the field of technology, it quickly becomes more a concept of longevity.
