using a gpu with a pci-e 8x slot?

Ashleyyyy

i have 1 pci-e 16x slot in my pc, with my gtx 1050 in it.

i also have a bunch of pci-e 8x slots in my pc. can i use those to use a second gpu? specifically a amd rx460?

i want to do this because i have 3 monitors and i like watching youtube on one of my side displays when i'm gaming on my center display.

so i want to run the other displays of that rx460. is this possible?

If it's just acting as a display adapter, you should be able to run displays off of it. Why not just run them all off the 1050 though, it has enough ports.

well you can install GPU's into any full length slot, mixing models is a different story, especially different manufactures.

the point is that i can't plug that rx460 in.. it doesn't fit in an 8x slot. i'm wondering if there are adaptors or something to make it work.

i have all of them in the 1050 now, but the issue is that watching youtube while gaming makes my fps go down.

i have ran amd and nvidia gpu's together fine with other pc's, but my current one has a server motherboard, and only 1 pci-e 16x slot..

so i need a way to install a gpu in an 8x slot. i was thinking of some kind of adaptor but i don't know if that exists.

well I found this cable, not sure how safe it is to use https://www.walmart.com/ip/PCI-Express-8X-Male-to-PCI-E-16X-Female-Riser-Cable/302773967?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=3851&adid=22222222227070210205&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=178040593867&wl4=pla-282301936986&wl5=9011033&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=115057149&wl11=online&wl12=302773967&wl13=&veh=sem

GPU's that low end don't even come close to saturating an x8 slot so there shouldn't be any performance issues.

you can actually (and im not kidding) cut off the back of the 8x slot and drop in the gpu like this

Have you already bought the RX460? The easiest solution would be to get a video card that has an x8 slot. If you have, then x8 to x16 adaptors exist though I'm not sure which one is the most reliable. Another option that the guy above me mentioned is to simply cut off the back of the slot which will work if done right. Though, I wouldn't try it unless you are comfortable with your hardware and can sacrifice your warranty for something that could potentially kill the slot and/or even your motherboard.

yeah i already have the rx460. i won't be cutting stuff off of the slots of my motherboard.. lga 1366 server boards are quite rare here so.. i don't want to have to replace it.

if i get an x8 to x16 adaptor will that work guaranteed?

If they're open-back x8 slots, then yes you can just plug the GPU right in.

i don't think so..

that's an x1 slot. Is that what's on your motherboard?

no. i have 1 x16 slot and the rest are x8.

EDIT: but that would fit in an x8 slot right?

Ok. The adaptor you linked is a x1 to x16 which should work but I'd recommend getting an x8 to x16 just for that extra bandwidth. Either way though, just watching youtube and web surfing may work fine with either setup and if not, it shouldn't be a problem to swap adaptors.

It will work, just not the way we usually do it (that is, cutting the back of the slot).

so if i get an x1 to x16 it will bottleneck? but yeah i'm only going to use that card to watch youtube and stuff.

x1 is an eighth of the bandwidth of x8 but I'm not sure how that will apply to that workload due to my limited knowledge and experience in this area. Hopefully, someone who knows more will chime in to answer that question.

it's okay. that adaptor i linked is cheap anyway. i'll just buy it and see if it works at all.  i already have the gpu so..

yep, trying out different adaptors can't hurt. I'd be interested to see how this experiment ends up.

ok, *drumroll*, it works. very well even. using the 1x to 16x adaptor i can easely get 60+fps in Overwatch using my rx460 on one of the side displays.

but, weirdly, the Windows desktop is very laggy and watching youtube in chrome uses both the gpu's for some reason while only being on one display... and it uses like 70% of the rx460 doing that.. i'm gonna investigate that a little bit.

EDIT: it's only google chrome that's laggy..
