LOST TALE reacted to Lorado in How is AMD these days?
This is what drove me away from AMD. I had 1 card, 10 years ago (can't remember which AMD card it was) and it was a driver nightmare. I love that NVidia drivers seem to make their cards better, even older cards. That's been my issue with AMD's video cards. Funny cause I jumped into AMD CPU's for the first time in 20 years with my new rebuild. (800mhz Athon 64bit was the last time I used one)
I guess you can liken AMD to a modified/ hot rod car. You have to manage the weirdness to keep it running well.

If you want a HDD without SMR, you're basically looking at NAS drives (not including the WD Red), such as the Red Plus, Red pro, Ironwolf (Pro), etc. or high end desktop drives like the WD Black or Toshiba X300.

Most 'normal' desktop drives like the WD Blue, Seagate Barracuda or Toshiba P300 are SMR.
Or of course shucking external drives is possible too; just gotta make sure the connectors are not soldered onto them (which I don't know if they do it on 3.5" drives, but that was kind of a thing on some 2.5" WD external drives).

/r/datahoarders probably has some good info on that

LOST TALE reacted to Fasauceome in Is a 600w PSU enough for a 3080?
nvidia lists 350 watts for the 3090, and 320 watts for the 3080. Usually their spec sheets for that stuff are pretty accurate.

Unless you're running a pretty big CPU like a threadripper 32 core, you should have plenty of juice. A Ryzen 5 3600 is sub 90 watts for peak loads, a Ryzen 7 3700X is barely over 100 watts. The rest of your system will consume less than 100 watts altogether.

LOST TALE reacted to CircleTech in Why can't graphics boards become just chips?
The real reason is because awhile ago engineers and businesspeople determined it's cheaper and easier to build a PCIe soloution with a GPU and memory already on it than to try to design a GPU socket and memory for such a thing to slot into.

Fun fact: Socketed GPUs are completely possible, and have even been done in the enterprise space for some time. They come in a "mezzanine" card form factor with the PCIe signals being routed over a martix-style connector as opposed to the linear PCIe connector:

Another fun fact: GPUs with socketed memory used to be available in the 90s. the blank slots are for more SRAM:

Of course at some point memory started getting cheap and too fast to use sockets, so GPU manufacturers moved to soldering GDDR to the board.

But in some labs like at Nvidia, they use custom test-jigs like this with a GPU slot to test GPUs. the black thing in the center is a GPU socket:

But other than these rare examples of either the entierprise or a lab, socketed GPUs are something consumers are very unlikely to see in the near future.

Just collecting them due to some of the following reasons (in my humble opinion):

    1) most aesthetically appealing card of all time (green shroud)

    2) infamous / history / hype / height of enthusiasm and discussion ... so much so it was covered with a full spread cover model

    3) rarity

Hoping to top off the collection with this frosted shroud early variant:

that might be your issue, not the actual headphones. Try using the direct plugs on the motherboard and see if that makes a difference, if not then you might return the headphones and try another pair, and if that doesn't work you may need a separate DAC

LOST TALE reacted to RyanIra in RX 580 fans won’t spin, but kick on when GPU hits temp limit and shuts off.
So I contacted seller and they just say “it worked when I shipped it”. eBay....
it’s almost 3 years old judging by manufacturing date so I doubt contacting  MSI will be much help?

the card is a MSI Radeon RX 580 4G OC
The temperatures seem to read correctly. I even tried to control it manually with afterburner and it wouldn’t spin at all.

You both suggested flashing bios. So maybe I’ll give that a try? I’ve done it once before in a 470.  The thing is it had worked fine for 3 weeks. So do you think bios could have somehow messed up? Or is reflashing the bios almost similar to just reloading Windows and hoping it fixed the issue? lol.

if I can’t figure anything else out I’ll maybe strap some case fans to it like both of you suggested. It’s already a potato so it might as well be even goofier looking.

    thanks

Install autohotkey. Create a text file and paste this code in there.
Then rename the file as name_you_like.ahk instead of .txt
If you want to have this script ready everytime your computer starts, type
    > WindowsKey+R
    > shell:startup
    > press enter

A folder opens. Place the script inside. That's your statup folder. If the script is placed here, it will start everytime you log into your computer.

You can use a single liner when only remapping one key to another, single one, just like we do with F6::^v. A single key is mapped to a single, other keyu (well, a combination in this case).

To execute more, you need to write an actual routine. Like so:

#NoEnv #Persistent #SingleInstance, Force F6:: Send, ^v{Enter} Return If your use case requires a pause between the two, Add a Sleep instructions between keys. Like so:

Where xxx is the time you want the script to wait betweeen the two, in milliseconds.

LOST TALE reacted to PorkishPig in Should a GTX 1080 give >144hz in Apex Legends?
I was able to run Apex Legends at around 110-120 FPS on medium-low settings with GTX 1070 Ti + R7 1700 in Season 1.

An RTX 2060 Super is barely an upgrade over the GTX 1080.
