"Mounting: Sleeve fans are best mounted in a vertical position due to their lubricant system. Sleeve fans can be mounted in any axial orientation, of course, but will 'wear out' more rapidly when mounted horizontally."

Is vertical when he fan is moving air horizontally?

Correct.  Vertical mounting is the fan up and down, like you stand.

Horizontal mounting is like you laying down.

Lots of FDB fans will have a statement like this either on their packaging or their webpage. I love Aerocool DS fans to the ends of the earth and back, but they have that limitation.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

Found this : https://www.bequiet.com/en/insidebequiet/4452

FDBearing : no problem with orientation

Sleeve bearing : better vertical

Ball Bearing : no problem with orientation

Riffle Bearing : no problem with orientation

But I remember reading about the frontier between FDB and Sleeve bearings being fuzzy. So some FDB might truly be SleeveB. Which would explain some discrepancy.

Sleeve bearings are the basis for most bearing types, quiet at the start, noisy at the end, and they die suddenly. The bq! Sleeve bearings are at the top end of the lifespan.

Rifle bearings are a sleeve with rifling (like in a firearm). They last a bit longer but otherwise are very similar to sleeves. The rifling takes advantage of, I believe, capillary action.

My understanding is that a single ball bearing is combined with another type of bearing, most often sleeve or rifle. Double means it's purely ball bearing. Ball bearings are sensitive to shocks so never drop them.

Fluid/Hydro are usually based on sleeve/rifle, but some may use ball bearings or mag lev, I think. There are hydrostatic and hydrodynamic; the former are sealed and have pressurized lubricant, usually via a pump, while the latter circulate the lube due to the movement.

Mag-lev comes in different varieties and some of the above types use ML. I think they're better horizontal but I could be wrong.

EBR is cloaked in secrecy but are considered top end.

Bearings that are not sealed tend to lose the oil, and it can get gunked up with dust and thicken. They're better off positioned vertically, or horizontally with the open side facing up... if you can see it.

Sorry about any errors.

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

My phone's auto-correct is named Otto Rong.🤪😂
