FYI Freesync Premium (LFC feature) does not work on HDMI 2.1

Fressync Premium works on DP 1.4 but not HDMI 2.1

HDMI 2.1 will only run Freesync normal without LFC (low frame rate compensation)

 

I tested this by forcing my fps to 24fps in games where freesync normal range worked and using a refresh rate number at the top of the screen to observe if the screen adjusts its refresh rate.

 

At this point if any game doesn't peak above 120hz and has any frame spike below 48hz then the display port cable is better.

 

It's sad that displays have been bottlenecked by cable standard adoption.

I tested both on my Neo G8 (4k 240Hz) when I got it since technically HDMI 2.1 is better than DP1.4. However, there was performance/latency issues that were resolved by just using DP 1.4 DSC, which I've had 0 issues with.

 

I plan to stick with the DP > HDMI posture that was reinforced by this.

Basically HDMI 2.1 implementation still not good compared with DP 1.4

 

I had 3 HDMI 2.1 capable monitor but all performance worse than DP 1.4

Tested on RTX 3080 and RTX 4090 and both same result.

  • Asus PG42UQ OLED - Not support G-sync compatible if not turn on VRR, and bad shuttering with VRR on.
  • Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 - Not support G-Sync compatible at 240hz refresh rate.
  • Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 - Not support G-Sync compatible at 240hz refresh rate.

I'm glad we're drawing attention to this as I was not aware of this when purchasing my monitor.
