paddy-stone reacted to Spotty in Silicon Lottery... cashes out? Goes bust? Help me think of a play on words here, I don't gamble. Point is, they're done.
With the way CPUs intelligently boost these days I can't say I'm surprised. There really isn't much overclocking headroom left on CPUs these days either.
They close down at the end of October but people can still send their CPUs in for another month after they close? Pro tip: don't send your $500+ CPU to a company that has shut down and expect to get it back.

paddy-stone reacted to BuckGup in China declares all crypto-currency transactions illegal
Don't be silly now. Drugs are illegal as well as murder and they are extremely controlled by the government yet you can find a surplus of drugs anywhere and people get murdered everyday. Just because something is labeled illegal doesn't make it vanish into a void. Nor does it impact the decentralization aspect. You say it's an illusion but that's simply not true. The reason it's decentralized is the actual mechanics of how it works. China can't shut down the blockchain nor can they trace crypto transaction to individuals, assuming they use proper security, so in short this does nothing but make it harder to use crypto in china and has no impact on the decentralized nature of it.

You don't need a dark theme if you're not here enough to notice the Theme button 🙂

paddy-stone reacted to poochyena in First steel made without fossil fuels
According to this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UmsfXWzvEA since wind power is constant, wind electricity is actually used to make hydrogen gas during non-peak hours since otherwise, the electricity would go to waste as there is little other energy storage or ways to utilize the energy during non-peak hours.

Before you get a dog, you can't quite imagine what living with one might be like; afterward, you can't imagine living any other way.

paddy-stone reacted to Alex Atkin UK in Are Magnetic Screwdrivers safe when building a PC?
Magnetic screwdrivers are pretty much standard kit, there is nothing in a modern PC that the tiny magnetic charge of a screwdriver is going to upset. Even laying it on a HDD is unlikely to do anything as they aren't strong magnets, a HDD already has a many many times stronger magnet inside it.

paddy-stone reacted to kelvinhall05 in Server came in the mail today. Is it safe to turn on?
Don't touch it, don't mess with it at all. Take pics of everything, including the box, and get a refund. This is unacceptable and unless it was sold in this condition, you shouldn't be expected to use it like this, regardless of if it works or not.

paddy-stone reacted to IkeaGnome in Apple is (going to) scan your Apple devices
I'm torn. On one hand. Why isn't this already a thing?
On the other hand, this opens a whole can of worms I don't want open. "We already search their photos for abuse, why not add this activity, or that activity"
Edit: I'm more worried about what it COULD turn into them monitoring later on.
"We see you have looked at pictures of guns 2 times the last week, but you live in a place where they are illegal. Let's notify authorities" or "We see you searched for 'how to avoid police radar scanners' time to turn you in"

paddy-stone reacted to Senzelian in In the US, life cycle emissions for EVs are 60-68% lower than gasoline.
Just like there wasn't any infrastructure for electric cars in the beginning.
It's a matter of what is more profitable and more popular. Hydrogen still leaves a bitter taste in people's mouth because of the Hindenburg.
So I'm sure it could be done, but it's probably just easier to go for electric cars at this point.
But I hope that the investment in hydrogen fuel cells and transportation will continue.

paddy-stone reacted to mariushm in Old CD pictures
All I can recommend is getting some older CD-RW / DVD-RW drives and try to make disk images and then recover pictures from them.
It's well known that discs break down after a few years, because the glue that keeps the layers together goes bad and then air and humidity gets inside the layers and they start to rot / oxidize so the disc starts to become unreadable.
Older drives may be able to read more data or just skip over unreadable blocks and still allow you to make a disc image and then recover some content from the image even if the list of files is not readable.

paddy-stone reacted to Pixel5 in What to buy as second file server?
77W is very bad if its just a simple file server considering you can get the same performance from an i3 10100 which will have a total system idle consumption under 20W
if electricity is expensive where OP lives this is a big deal, for me this 57W higher idle power consumption would cost me ~143€ per year in electricity.
thats basically almost the price of an i3 10100 and a motherboard.

paddy-stone reacted to Lurick in Google Sued by 36 states over Play Store fees
There are numerous app stores you can load on Android devices very easily. Samsung has one, Amazon has one, etc. so there is nothing stopping people from using others anyway. Sure Play Store is the default on Android but at least they don't block you from using other app stores so not sure why they are going after Google for this and not Apple?
