Are Magnetic Screwdrivers safe when building a PC?

Yes, they're fine. I have been using Magnetic screw drivers for as long as I can remember. Heck, the iFixit kits are all magnetic as well. I use one that came with my Cryorig R1 Ultimate cooler as well as some run of the mill cheap ones you can get at your local hardware shop. Just make sure they're long enough to reach some of the areas that can be a pain or short enough to clear tight spots. You will need a combination of Phillips 0, 1 and 2 heads to complete the job on most builds.

I'm building my first PC and I'm having some struggles with using a normal screwdriver and was wondering if I could use a magnetic screwdriver instead? A lot of the screws are small and fiddly and so I don't want to lose one and have it damage my system in anyway.

 

Could anyone recommend a good but affordable set?

Magnetic screwdrivers are pretty much standard kit, there is nothing in a modern PC that the tiny magnetic charge of a screwdriver is going to upset.  Even laying it on a HDD is unlikely to do anything as they aren't strong magnets, a HDD already has a many many times stronger magnet inside it.

Ah right, that's good to know! I'm on a budget and so I'm quite conscious about doing any damage but I'm glad that they're safe to use.

That's good to know. As I said before, I'm on a budget and so I'm conscious about not causing damage and wasting money.

iFixit kits come with magnetic screwdriver bits, so I'd say it's safe to assume you're fine using them on a PC build.

You need extremely strong magnets to and even then it's not like waving one past your phone or credit card is going to destroy it instantly

so long they are not 10x stronger than your regular screwdriver, which wouldn't be great to use anyways. (and might not give much damage either if any)

There are some parts that could be sensitive to it, but you would likely be most worried about stabbing something or breaking something by impact instead.

Not sure how its for HDD (that is actively running) if they are or can be sensitive to this, but then again they are sensitive to just being moved or vibration when in use anyways. And also not short anything with the metal part if you push it into something that is connected with power, so have the power off when messing around 😛 .

Spinning Disks (And possibly a mag-lev fan?) are the only thing inside a PC that are vulnerable to magnetic fields, really.  (Unless you're talking about super-strong fields that we don't deal with in normal life.)

 

Solid state everything has made everything mostly immune to magnets now.

Credit cards can be remarkably easy to wipe (though few readers should be using the magnetic strip these days), hotel key cards even more so because they are re-written so often they tend to be weak.

That's also pretty misleading as they probably shorted the GPU, nothing to do with it being a magnet.

 

Also the HDD would probably be fine if it wasn't running as the heads would be parked rather than crashing into the platter which probably happened here.

 

I'd also be VERY concerned keeping a strong magnet near any inductors, but again only likely an issue while running.

I've been using non-magnet screwdrivers since the mid-90s because I was worried about that. Now that I think about it, that made things a lot harder for a danger that made no sense.

Would argue that not using a magnetic screw driver is more dangerous as screws can fall and short stuffs, especially in PSU
