KnightSirius reacted to Hilicot in Kite, WAN show sponsor, shady business practices?
    Hello, new forum member here!
I joined because I saw that the yesterday WAN show was sponsored by Kite, which is a company that offers machine learning code autocompletion, and being a programmer myself, I heard not very good things about them.

According to this article and comments on github/twitter, the company acquired some very popular open source plugins for Atom without disclosing the buyout, which were then modified to send data to their own servers (running proprietary code, of course). Once people noticed that Kite bought those plugin, they refused to give ground, causing a glorious community backslash.
As a user of one of those plugins (atom-minimap), I was quite shocked that a company managed to successfully buy it under me, to basically put ads for their site inside Atom.

If you have the time, I really encourage you to read the article, it's a very entertaining rabbit hole.

I've been struggling with making friends after moving countries, not being able to socialize so if you feel the same reach out and lets do something about it!

There are millions if not billions of people who worked much harder and have nothing to show for it today. Let's not pretend any billionaire got where they are through anything but pure luck.

Even just looking at Musk's own life, do you think this year he worked 10 times more than he did during the entire rest of his life? Or did he just win at the stock lottery?

There are people whose achievements have been fundamental to our every day lives whose names nobody even remembers. Musk is just a businessman who invented nothing and busted unions for personal profit.
Why does it make "little sense"? What use can a single man have for 190 billion?

Bezos in reality is "richer" since all of his wealth isn't tied into Amazon stock where as Elon's net worth is like 99% Tesla stock that he can't sell without financially ruining the company. Bezos could also sell off his stock without sending Amazon stock spiraling through the floor since Amazon stock is way more diversified among investors.

I enjoyed the video, it was rather interesting and good for you guys to tell us the issues the company behind the product has.

Some people in this thread seem to confuse two separate issues with the video titles.
Just to make my stance clear from the beginning: the video title is fine (the one on YouTube, without the "Even Spectrum first look")

    The two separate issues are:
    - Clickbait
    - Not mentioning the product in the title, to be (easily) able to find the video on it later.

    Clickbait:
This title is not clickbait, because the video directly addresses the title; the issues with certain Kickstarter projects.
Things like non-delivery, very long waiting times, little to no information for the consumer after they backed the campaign, etc.

    Finding the video later:
If people want to "find that one video from LTT about that one product" in the future, it is harder with these sorts of titles, which don't mention the product name. You only have the "clickable title" and the thumbnail to go off.

    Conclusion:
It's important that we as a community give constructive criticism to LTT videos, thumbnails and titles.
I've seen people in this thread complain about clickbait, without telling us why it's clickbait.
This video isn't all about that product, the product merely served as a bridge between different issues Kickstarter products have. No, this video isn't about all Kickstarter campaigns and the numerous possible issues, only about issues with this and the company's previous campaign.

People seem to be confusing "clickbait" with "the product name isn't in the title", which are completely separate issues. Merging the two into one will only muddy the waters, in terms of our message - as a community - towards our issues with the title.

Let's not scream "Clickbait!!" (especially before watching the video, not a single minute after the topic is posted), but rather watch the video and provide criticism why you think it's clickbait.

KnightSirius reacted to Crondax in Need some advice for navigating PC hardware market.
    Hello everyone,

I'm new to this community and I'm really hoping to receive some advice. I've been looking to upgrade my PC for a year now since I am running on a prebuilt system from 6 years ago (4th gen i7, GTX 750, 16 GB 1600mhz ram) I recently bought a case, AMD motherboard, and new ram after doing much research. After reading some articles and watching videos today about how the GPU and CPU market prices will be going up this year I'm unsure what to do at this point. Im looking for advice, if I should just return the parts I bought and wait another year for this or if there is any hope of finding a midrange GPU and CPU in stock and for a decent price this year. I work as a graphic designer and dabble in 3D art so my machine is really holding me back and its becoming seemingly hopeless to ever upgrade for work purposes.

Thanks in advance if you take the time to read this and leave comments.

Most people use their eyes to detect what the people around them are doing (unless you for some reason like overhearing other people's conversations...?), and it is in fact possible to remove earbuds that are being worn, if needed. They are not an implant.
I don't know about you, but I like using my eyes to observe the traffic around me. Look both ways before crossing, etc. If you are just walking straight into the road, and relying on listening for traffic, I would be more worried about you.
Ah, yes, because people that do not wear earbuds never get stabbed or mugged. I did not know that calling 911, a trip to the ER, or even death is sometimes a consequence of being stabbed, thank you for informing us about this, you are very smart.
Ah, yes, correlation = causation. You not wearing earbuds in traffic is the only reason you haven't gotten stabbed, mugged or ran over. That seems like a very valid conclusion

KnightSirius reacted to iBabySlapper in Horology on the LTT forum- A watch thread
So, I noticed there wasn't a watch thread on LTT forums. Since most online watch forums are... not beginner friendly, I thought it might be a good idea to start something here.
Post pictures and/or discussions about watches of any kind; hand-wind, automatic, quartz, mecha-quartz, pocket watches, cuckoo clocks, Swiss, Japanese, Chinese, Khyber pass, I'll even torelate smart watches. If you're looking for something, maybe one of us will be able to help you.

You might love it, you might hate it (or more likely a bit of both), write your opinion so others can chime in too. Not agreeing is okay, just don't be a dick about it.

Right, I'll start. With one of my favourite makes; Vostok.

This is a vintage Vostok Amphibia (70s/80s it's difficult to tell the exact vintage), and is made of Titanium nitride plated brass. While not my only, or rarest Vostok, it's a nice piece and a good place to start. These were rated to 200m of water resistance, being Soviet navy dive watches, but I'm not exactly keen on testing that out on a vintage watch (though the crown/caseback seal is in good condition). These early Amphibias have a proven in-house 17 ruby hand-winding movement called the 2209, which while not the most accurate, are rugged and will work over a decade between services (though this one was serviced 3 months ago). The strap is an 18mm Fluco Montana Zlege Brown Goatskin strap.

I'd say this watch has two main charming qualities; the size and the green-copper starburst dial.
This watch was designed in a time very different from today, and has very diminutive dimensions by today's standards.
With a lug width of 18mm, a width of 38.5mm (including the screw-down crown) and a lug-to-lug of 40mm, this watch is dwarfed by even a modern Vostok Kommanderskie (which is a pretty small watch as well), and is even smaller than many women's watches.
The starburst dial catches the light exceptionally, and the slightly unconventional colour works very well with the Titanium nitride plating.

A side note about the strap: The strap is a bit unusual that it's a goatskin strap. Goat leather, while is slightly harder on the outside, has a high fat content compared to cow leather, so the back of the strap has a very buttery texture. If you want a exceptionally soft, but relatively rugged leather strap, goatskin might be a good choice.

I don't want to make the first post too long, but I'll add one more. This one's the cheapest piece in my collection, I believe I got it for £10 from Aliexpress (the strap was more than the watch). Anyone could afford this one, which is why I wanted to post it.

This is a watch from a Chinese brand called "Naviforce", that flogs their watches cheap on Aliexpress. As you may or may not notice, it's a rough Timex Inteligent quartz fly-back "homage".
The strap is a 22mm Beco-Technic Arizona Sport Brown.
Looking at Aliexpress now, it seems the watch is a bit more now at £15, but I'd still pay that for this watch.

It's not a bad looking watch for the money, and with the Seiko quartz inside this thing, it'll be dependable.
The measurments are: Lug width 22mm, L-t-L 53mm, width incl. crown 50mm. This makes the Naviforce a medium-to-large watch.
The dial is printed well, and the watch features a weekday and date complication.
The caseback seems to be machined, and is surprisingly nice. The stainless steel case itself is surprisingly reassuring for a £10 watch, and doesn't feel cheap.
The included strap is a fake suede deal, that'll do in a pinch, but I thought the watch was nice and cheap enough to justify a strap upgrade.

KnightSirius got a reaction from Cromox in CPU-Upgrade
Here is a good breakdown of what the differences are (also a video version in the article) but the main difference is X570 supports PCIe 4.0 whilst B550 does not. It may also have a better VRM configuration which is useful for overclocking but that depends on the manufacturer, it also tends to have a few more USB ports and such which is generally useful.

Most people here will rightfully tell you, that unless you know you need PCIe 4.0 you shouldn't bother with X570 and save the money.

However, in my opinion I'd go X570 as long as you're not paying an extravagant amount more over a similar B550 board. PCIe 4.0 might not be the most useful thing right now but GPUs will eventually leverage that extra bandwidth and high speed SSDs like those used in the PS5 are certainly going to become more consistently utilised in game development in the future so you'd be allowing yourself the opportunity to upgrade your system in the next 3-6 years to take advantage of that if you wanted it.

I stick with my PC for around 7 years at a time, so to me the extra cost now is worth it for use in the future but it's really up to you to determine whether it is worth it.

Looks great! I've built a PC for a family member with that motherboard and it was quite good, also well rated overall.
My only suggestion is look further into M.2 Drives, you should be able to get a 500-1TB drive for a reasonable price and it's easier to do now than later. 256 is pretty small these days especially if you want to load a few often-played games on it.

The Corsair MP510 series is very high performing and cost effective; the same goes for Sabrent Rocket drives which also have PCIe 4.0 variants if you want to go that route.

3600MHz in the C16 to C18 range is the sweet spot, higher frequency than this is wasted and lower leaves some performance on the table. Should be easily achievable within budget at 16GB-32GB (depending on your needs), although I don't know what EU prices are like.

Yesterday was December 31st 2020, it was the end of a terrible year and also the end of what became a terrible piece of software. It was Adobes official end of life date for Flash Player.

As of yesterday Adobe recommends that anyone with Adobe Flash installed on their devices should remove it, most browsers already block flash content and Microsoft will be removing it from Windows PCs (likely on the next patch Tuesday). From January 12th 2021 Flash Player will stop playing Flash animations entirely and the final remnants of the first iteration of a multimedia internet will die forever.
Flash's death started in 2015 when Adobe recommended all web developers start using HTML5. Its taken 5 years but now its officially dead.
Of course there's now a huge push to archive as much flash content as possible before it dies permanently.
    https://www.theverge.com/2020/12/31/22208190/adobe-flash-is-dead

Flash really did change the face of the internet. I remember the early days of the modern internet, we got our first family PC in the early 90s with dial up and 3 months free Compuserve. I remember surfing for hours, endless walls of green comic sans text on black backgrounds, larger images had to be physically downloaded to be viewed, every page had a visitor counter on it.

I was actually the perfect age for Flash, by the time I hit my late teens/twenties it was everywhere. Ebaums world was my favourite place, my mates and I would spend hours watching satire and nonsense.

KnightSirius reacted to xmarkx88 in Trying to return a Laptop to HP and the process is a complete SCAM... Any advice????
Long story short, it appears that HP is trying to make it impossible to return items that 100% qualify for return. I have sat on hold this so many times this week to have identify the pattern they used to make returns almost impossible. They simply don't even consider picking up your call until you have been on hold for 3 hours!!! I made a video to prove out this pattern. Like clockwork, and as predicted, this is when the call finally rings through to HP customer support. For the first 3 hours, it is just game of chicken to see who will give out first. The prior 2 times, I was just pushed over to other departments that told me that they couldn't help. This time the call just ended because they probably didn't even have anyone answering the calls to begin with. They must figure that no one would actually wait on the phone for 3 hours.

I've tried reaching out to them through email as well. Seriously, what can be done when a company pulls crap like this to prevent a return? I plan to call again and record the entire call for further documentation. I purchased through paypal and have already opened a claim. Has anyone had any luck going the BBB?

Here is a video to prove out these shenanigans are like clockwork. The quality is crap since I only had a tablet to record from since I was using my phone to make the call. I started recording at like 2 hours and 58 minutes because I knew they would finally pick up, but didn't expect them to just hang up this time...
