Elon Musk has been crowned "the richest man on Earth" today largely thanks to an increase in Teslas stock prices.

The Tesla and SpaceX entrepreneur was pushed into the top slot after Tesla's share price increased on Thursday.

Musk overtakes Jeff Bezos who had held the position since 2017.

Tesla currently has a market value of $700bn 🤯

Bezos in reality is "richer" since all of his wealth isn't tied into Amazon stock where as Elon's net worth is like 99% Tesla stock that he can't sell without financially ruining the company. Bezos could also sell off his stock without sending Amazon stock spiraling through the floor since Amazon stock is way more diversified among investors.

Its insane how people don't understand the difference between having stocks and having actual money. Elon didn't suddenly get more money on his bank account, only Tesla's  shares increased in price. The second he tries to capitalize those stocks, they will drop and crash, and he will be left with nothing.

Good on him. He's one of the few super rich who are actually pushing forward to something useful. It'll be interesting to see what he does with his wealth when he's old, I could see him turning into quite the philanthropist.

yep. And wealth is only theoretical, its just an estimation of his current worth. tesla share price could drop to $1 tomorrow and he'd be left, well, not poor, but no where near the wealthiest person alive. Too many people imagine wealth as cash and physical assets, when in reality, most rich people's wealth is tied up in speculation.
