Should I get the 970 Strix for $240?

DaltonM

I really want to upgrade my 750ti, but I need something to hold me over till pascal. I decided since this a temporary upgrade, that I would get the 970 instead of a 980.

Please don't recommend an AMD card, I am running a very Nvidia based system and gamestreaming 5g home network.

I work for a logistics sector of a company, I get access to low priced electronics, and DandH is having an open box sale, and it includes this card:

http://www.amazon.com/GeForce-Overclocked-256-bit-DisplayPort-Graphics/dp/B00NJ9BJ8G/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1449005008&sr=1-1&keywords=STRIX-GTX970-DC2OC-4GD5

It's an Asus GTX 970 Strix. While I wanted something small, I am having trouble trying to beat this price.

Can you guys recommend this card at this price? I wanted a smaller card so I could pop it into my mini pc, but there is no such thing as a single slot 900 series. :(

Hmm, yeah.

THat's a good price. It's not the best 970, but a 970 is a good card. Especially for that price

OP is giving the Amazon link for reference, he can get an open box Strix 970 for 240 dollars.

Sure. It's definitely not the best version of the 970 but it's still a 970, meaning performance will be good for the price (for an NVIDIA card, at least)

That's a fairly decent deal, I don't think you'll do much better value wise.

Why would you say that? I see you post a lot so I somewhat trust your opinion.

Also, it looks like no one is getting anything from me for xmas >:D

i would take 5 and resell it

It's open box so it's limited quantities. But I could seriously do this. But I wouldn't make much money off each card. I'm getting these at retailer price, so i'd have to sell them just dollars under the full price.

Asus cards recently have been REALLY disappointing across the board. Their customer support is also non-existent

Personally, I never liked the Strix aesthetic (spelled it right first try) but I wouldn't deal with their customer support as it's open box and has a limited warranty

240 for a open box 970 is a bit on the high side because you don't get a warranty (afaik). Some brand new 970s were close to the 250 price during the past holiday weekend and a refurb 970 can be had from evga for 250 very regularly (even comes with a 1 year warranty).

How exactly...?

It's one of the best selling 970s, look at the reviews

HUGE amount of 5 star ratings

And you're buying a GPU, not customer support, so I dont see how that has anything to do with it.

Everytime I want to get a GPU I talk myself out of it :( I can't bring myself to spend anywhere near $300 on it when like $60 is negligible to me.

I got the 4690k instead of 4460 because it was like a $50 difference at the time. I feel like if I didn't get exactly the GPU I wanted there isn't a point.

But the value seems strong for this one. I almost want to get it to sell it.

Customer Support is very important, especially for expensive purchases. Asus makes a lot of things, I can't imagine their support being particularly concise.

Well I had no problem with their support...

I contacted them, got a reply within two days, and got my RMA processed within a week.

Few weeks later I got a brand new board, a newer model too.

The last good deal on the 970 was the EVGA GTX 970 ACX 2.0 for $210 refurbished through EVGA B-Stock, and I believe that was a black Friday deal, $240 for the Strix is pretty fair as well.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.
