SanDisk Squeezes 200GB Into a Tiny microSD Card + Type-C Thumbdrive

zgd0x2uvkngydzmhcjgk.jpg

Dear mother of god. This is looney. This is wonderful. I don't know where exactly you could use this, even in phones, given its price tag. But thats still a healthy amount of space to have for anything.

Maybe a years time from now, they will drop by 75% and then make sense to shove into basically anything. I would LOVE to shove one of these into a laptop as discrete, portable storage. Think...those ultrabooks with a SD slot. You can get very low profile SD cards and adapters, so this would be neat for that kind of use.

Not at 400 dollar though. Thats just a ridiculous early adopter price. But its nice to see them around all the same.

Available sometime in the second quarter of 2015, the new microSDXC card uses the same technology that SanDisk developed for the 128GB microSDXC card it introduced last year, but with an improved design allowing the company to increase storage capacity by 56 percent. The new card also boasts transfer speeds of up to 90MB/sec, but once available its $400 price tag might be a little hard to swallow—even if the card itself isn't.

But given it will be a few years before USB Type-C is common on all computers and mobile devices, SanDisk's new 32GB Dual USB Drive still comes with a standard-sized USB port on one end. When using the other, though, you'll never again have to make a 50/50 guess as to which is the right side up because like with Apple's Lightning connector, USB Type-C is reversible—hooray!

Maybe it was a 256GB chip but due to yields they just slashed it to 200GB? Might be 256GB once yields are better?

thats what I was thinking. I couldn't justify it, when there 128gb is only $79, will it even be supported in phones, most that still do have a mSD slot, only support up to 128gb right?

very true, I've been waiting to buy a 256gb mSD for a while but not at that price

I'd probably buy one, honestly... But it does beg the question... why are SSDs so damn expensive still.

Remember the time when they promised us 2TB SDXC cards?

Still takes a while...

Wouldn't the phone have to actually support storage it wasn't built for? Kinda like how these super large capacity hard drives would have issues on older motherboards.

2TB is the limitation for SDXC, like 2GB is for SD and 32GB is for SDHC.

Can't be used in any phone because those only support up to 64 or 128gb, but it's nice for cameras (specifically gopros etc). It's probably 200gb because they have a 128gb and a 64gb cell in there, they may have not been able to manufacture a monolithic 256gb memory bank of that size.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

many phones say 64 GB support but work fine with 128Gb

is there an actual limit or just "this device was tested with xxx storage"

I'm sure phones in the future will be able to accommodate it, however considering that most are moving away from micro SD even samsung it might never happen :(

I have a 128GB SD card that I use with my camera. The only feasbale place I could see using this would be in the new 4K gopro's, but I think they max at 64 or 128GB.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

it is nice however to be able to have multiple sd cards for photos, personally I would go with 2 128gb's because you can be taking off data as you are still recording, also if you lose one its not the end of the world and you don't lose all your data only some

I think there IS a limit, but it may have something to do with how the card is formatted

I'm sure phones in the future will be able to accommodate it, however considering that most are moving away from micro SD even samsung it might never happen :(

That really sucks but it's true :( personally I just refuse to buy a phone without an sd card slot, it's straight up stupid and for the price they could very well make the effort.. but no, they have to sell you 120$ storage upgrades... >.> apple >.>
