WetRarity Redux

RainColt

This Is the start of WetRarity Ver 1.1 (WetRarity Redux (Super Mega Ultra Eddddition))

post-1173-0-60932200-1419719940_thumb.jp

In WetRarity I attempted to build an oil cooled computer in a fishtank that would also house fish, but I also attempted to do it with very little knowledge on both acrylic and fish which introduced a bit of a learning curve to what would have otherwise been a pretty simple build I also attempted to do it on a budget of 0$ which introduced it's own challenges, like not having the right tools for the job and having to compromise on the components and how I made them fit the theme. By the time I could have finished WetRarity Ver1.0 It wasn't really what I had originally planned, sure I could have both a computer and fish in one tank but it was more of a sloppy arts and crafts project than a cool computer, so I scrapped it, tore it apart, tossed out everything and started over with the knowledge I had accrued hoping to make something that is actually awesome.

Parts:
MoBo: Asus Z87 Sabertooth (Purchased)
I chose this board because it was like 50$ cheaper than the Z97 Sabertooth since it's going in oil I'm willing to sacrifice the incredible benefits of Z97 (no benifits) for 50$ on an item that will be pretty much unsalvageable and I personally hate the camo design on the Z97 which honestly wouldn't really matter because I'm getting it because It's easy to paint but that is why I ruled out waiting for the Z97 Sabertooth Mark S

CPU: I5 4590 (Purchased)
I went with a 4590 instead of an unlocked chip because in spite of me no longer being on a budget I just can't not budget, Its an i5 for 210$, that's more than I have ever spent on a CPU and I'm sticking it in oil so basically its again a write off, It's a part that I might be able to salvage from this build if it ever breaks but if it does I'll just be starting Ver1.2 with the same parts...or maybe not the same parts who knows.

Ram: 8-16GB corsair vengence LP White (Purchased)
I've had this ram for a long time like I got 4x4gb 1600 for 99.99 thats how long I've had it and it's just been kicking around and it fits the colour sceme so might as well use it.

Cooler: Noctua NH-C12P SE14 (Purchased)
I went with this cooler because I liked the way it looked...wow what a shock(wish I could come up with a cooling pun), I wanted something that I don't often see in oil cooled computers, a bit of a rarity so to speak. I commonly see large "U" type heatsinks in oil cooled computers and thats good, it has larger surface area which is wanted in an oil cooled computer, but I just wanted something different and when searching I found a "C" type heatsink with a nickle finish all around, beautifully curved heatpipes, which ended in a regal crown atop...but I found out it was discontinued and settled for this...I'm kidding I found this from noctua and I really like the symmetry and with the missing fins exposing the heatpipe I feel it gives it an aggressive aesthetic without over doing it, I like aggressive looking heatsinks but this one does it with subtlety.

PSU: Nzxt Hale82 V2 (purchased).

GPU:7970 (logisys dracula and backplate) (Purchased)
I've decided to use my 7970 with a logisys dracula because it looks similar to my noctua cooler and i think that with a custom backplate and some LEDs it should be pretty.

Storage: 128gb OCZ Vector (purchased)

(I will start updating when I get home on January 2ndish when I can be alone because right now I have real people staring at everything I do and It's a bit uncomfortable to be funny.)

Text Update: I don't have it in me to start sorting through pictures and get this thing rolling but I just filled it with water after forming my lid and motherboard tray and I think she's holding in there but just barely.

Just needed to make sure that with an angle it would fit within the confinesof 24 inches, it's all just head math

Alright let's get this thing moving.

First step is to make a plan, I've already got a post with that plan drawn out (sortof) but then it's good to draw it out again, second guess every thing you do because if you don't you might just end up wasting time and money making something that your powersupply wont fit in because you forgot to take into account that it's not just a box but a box with an extra couple of inches on it when you put a power cord in it and then your super cool purple power cord that you made needs to have a right angle...anyways just make sure that you are very critical of your design and think of everything you can, so draw it out measure 3 times if you have to or redo it 3 times when you find out you have to.

After going through a few pieces of acrylic I've finally learned that a circular saw is the best saw for cutting acrylic, or at least the 3.5mm(1/8")(The measurements might be a bit wonky, I live in Canada where metric and imperial are sort of both used equally, it's a bit bipolar)acrylic that I used for the "partition" as @LinusTech calls it here. I found that a hand saw also works well but is slow, i've had moderate success (but wouldn't reccommend using) with a jigsaw which was the first saw that I tried to use, with both a metal cutting and woodcutting blade I was lucky to not have the acrylic crack at some point simply because the way the jigsaw cuts would cause alot of vibration, maybe not last but definitely least, I have now at my disposal a reciprocating saw and would completely advise not using it, even with the far more controlled vibrations of the jigsaw and the acrylic clamped tight I was lucky to get an acceptable cut with it, a reciprocating saw is useless for cutting any acrylic of this thickness. Another way of cutting acrylic that I have tried is scoring it with a knife and attempting to crack it over a sharp edged counter, this might work with thinner acrylic or even with shorter lengths, I only ever had success with a 15"(38cm) lengh

Looking awesome can't wait to see how it will come together :D, but as for cutting acrylic if you have access to to table saw those work really well for cutting thick and thin acrylic, just be sure to have a fine tooth blade/finish blade when cutting acrylic.

So pumped for this. Ever since Linus said it probably wouldn't work in his mineral oil PC video, I've been rooting for you. Please pull this off  :D

Other people have done this before, one person even had small sharks in the pc. I can't remember where it was though

The diamonds arn't just there because i like to draw diamonds, no I plan on carving them into the acrylic with a dremel hoping to get a cool sort of neon lighting effect from the UV light. Look at how smoothly this is going with the right tools, no need to make trip after trip to get new acrylic because you cant get it to cut right.

And now to bend it, I could have simply made 90 degree bends and simply been done with it but I like angles. the only difference in design between a Xblox and PS4 is that one of the engineers working for Sony remembered how to use soh cah toa to make a pretty box, I also like a pretty box so instead of easy 90* i went with 110* (I ended up with 107* and 111* but thats not bad)

I made a simple little 20* angle and I lined it up over the edge of the table to bend it.

post-1173-0-38681000-1419893956_thumb.jp

clamped it down.

post-1173-0-07809700-1419894165_thumb.jp

and pulled out the blow torch. There are alot of ways to bend acrylic, probably better ways but this is the way that I do it. you got to be patient and hit it evenly, if you overheat any point of it, it will boil leaving bubbles that I personally don't like the look of and weaken the structural integrity of the bend, I simply print it back and forth quickly with a low/medium flame only allowing it to lick the tip ("...only allowing it to lick the tip" I'll take "What you shouldn't do with your pets for 500") of the flame.

The outside of the acrylic has to stretch in order to make a bend, you know just like in any other bendy thing so the outside has to move farther apart to accommodate this bend while the inside just has to compress making the distance it has to travel significantly shorter than the outside which is why I focus more on the outside than the inside, I only make one quick pass underneath, I also, for the most part just let the weight of the acrylic bend it's self.

When I finally do put pressure on it, I wear an Ove' Glove because it actually does what it says it does and wearing it you can actually run a torch over your hand, it's a pretty cool "as seen on tv" product that I sort of just picked up while grabbing a protractor.

I ended up with about 3 bubbles in total at one end, which is a bit of a problem area because you tend to pause for a moment at the end as you slow your momentum preparing to go back.

also Ove' Glove is OP, although 20$ for one really, just give me a pair of them

Dont remind me of Maths... With your SOHCAHTOA

I actually got really excited when I realized that I could use math in the real world, I drew it out and was like "lets put an angle in there...oh but wait that would make this longer but by how much...If only there where a way to figure this out, let see what do I know, well, I know this needs to be 6.625 and that this is a 90* angle leaving giving me an angle side and angle...Ohh oh I learnt this in high school."

Also that video looks like awful cringe

my teacher played it in my class. But hey, it probably helpedhelped me pass maths which was a relief.
