NYC to replace public pay phones with 10,000 free gigabit WiFi pylons

TheUNCONN3CT3D

LinkNYC, a new plan for the financial capital of the world will be replacing 10,000 public pay phones with pylons (towers, posts) that will be capable of providing free public Wi-Fi capable of gigabit internet speeds 24/7. It also is a charging station for your mobile devices, is able to call any number domestically in the US, and it will also feature a tablet-like interface that can provide services within the city such as directions. Sounds expensive doesn't it? Especially since it isn't using taxpayer dollars, the entire thing will be paid for through advertising profits. The commercial version of the posts will feature a massive screen on both sides of the pylons showing ads. The residential version will not (pictures featured below from the article.) This project is estimated to bring NYC $500 million in revenue over its first 12 years.

While it is questionable how LinkNYC will be able to deliver gigabit speeds over Wi-Fi as most networks cannot sustain a gigabit connection on their own today. LinkNYC will be available throughout all five boroughs. I'm personally hopping seamless hoping from pylon to pylon will be supported. I'm especially excited for this mainly because I live in NYC but I love to see that we're finally beginning to move away from slow, low reception public Wi-Fi.

Charging station?

What?

So you're going to stand next to one of those things for about 4 hours?

Those are just going to get vandalized to shit.

True, they'll probably have hidden cameras on them in order to catch speeders and people who do vandalize that stuff.

No. It's a WiFi hotspot.

Yeah, I was thinking the same. But if you've got one of those phones that can do Quick Charging a few minutes should be all you need!

But that was not the main purpose.

People who live right next to one just saved $60 month on their internet bill.

Unless you're a gamer and care about your latency. But haha, I can see people doing that if they don't game.

YUY!!! All the New Yorkers are here. @NuroKnight get your ass over here.

This is good because I can get interwebz access (once I get a phone) outdoors without using cellular data.

That's odd my school doesn't care if we bring our phones. We use them everywhere no one says a thing. What school do you go to? PM me if you don't want to publicize it.
