Microsoft Considering Making Bing Search Engine Open Source

GoodBytes

Microsoft is of a big change of direction under the new CEO, Satya Nadella, Microsoft presented their love to Linux, by offering Linux with complete enterprise level support to their Azure platform, which is gaining great popularity at a high pace due to the support Microsoft offers, including the performance and flexibility it provides. Later, Microsoft announced .NET running not only on MacOS and Linux, but also made .NET open source, a smart move which will greatly boost C# popularity. A language already open source, but due to it's limitations without .NET, not very useful. This will soon change.

And Now, Microsoft rumors suggest that Microsoft is considering making the back end of Bing search engine open source. This is a big killer move to Google, as it won't allow others to improve the search engine, but also make sure it is secure and private, and also, it could attract more users which will make the search engine better as more searches are made. Google is good, because it was in the works, improved, and massively used to better fetch intended results, Bing is still new compared to Google, and has a lot to learn.

In addition, Microsoft has nothing to loose, as the search engine isn't a success.

Seriously, I want them to explain to me how the hell does searching for my school and department on Bing leads to several porn sites with safe search on.

They should, so I can fuck it up as badly as possible so Microsoft loses money on it and they are forced to give up Bing, for good.

No guys this is great, you can just have it redirect your search to Google!

Or this. Either fuck it up very badly or just redirect it to Google.

They should first allow people to change the search button search engine on WP8, then I'd be happier, as I'm stuck using bing which when something is mistyped comes back with the most obscure and far fetched results. But when it's typed in accurately, it's just as good as google, sometimes beating it with the little extras like suggestions of alternatives etc.

We already know the basic algorithm

function bingSearch(query){     results = google(query);     bingResults = scramble(results);     bingResults = bingResults + tacoPictures;     return bingResults;}

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I like Bing. Bing does some things better then google. Bing maps respond better then Google's for me at least but google maps have more stuff.

I use Bing and google. I use Bing and google on my windows phone as well. I really like bing's layout and they have a really good video section and google kinda copied how Bing did their image search layout.

The problem with Bing is that for more complicated searches it just doesn't work as well as Google's web search. I get more up to date relevant web search items then Bing.

If Bing's web search greatly improved then id use only Bing but Google's web search engine is simply better. I do like Bing's layout better.

fucking this.

but won't making it open source inevitably make it better? I mean when you've hit bedrock, you can only go up..

Bing does make better searches if you know what's actually doing, I worked on several art projects and Bing was the only search engine that I could use to found the right material.

Once you know how the API works then it can become a great tool for when you need something specific. Is it better than Google? Depends on what you are doing, Google is superior and easier to use most of the times, but has its limitations and fails to land accurate results on some case scenarios; that's when you can take advantage of search engines like Bing.

Some possibilities with Bing are the ability to also consider punctuation as part of the word, to ban a search with X topic, to allow only one file type the website leads to etc. For example if you want information about a Smarthphone but you don't want it to be about Apple, just type 'smartphone NOT iphone' (without the ' ' ) on Bing.

Information about the Bing API basics: http://www.bing.com/developers/s/APIBasics.html

Bing dev center: http://www.bing.com/dev/en-us/dev-center

Bing's tool are actually powerful and useful, pretty much made by it's developers to help them with their needs, but also to help the user on the same way.

While Google and even DuckDuckGo can get really deep the web to bring you what you might be looking for, Bing can indeed provide more functionality, and having it Opensource means it's going to be good for all consumers.

Don't be such a close minded crowd with products or services you don't like using! because you can miss on good stuff, it happens the same when someone chooses only Corsair products for example, they are great but fanboysm just limits us.

Bing is fine. Slightly worse than google for some results, but when pretty much forced to use it at college, it gave far better, if far less, image results.

For what it is, bing is pretty damn impressive. Remember that Microsoft's core business in no way revolves around bing at all, whereas google relies on their search and invest massively into their algorithm.

I wouldn't use it over google simply due to my university email using gmail, but if I was again forced to use it it wouldn't really affect me day-to-day.

I miss iGoogle. If someone was to take this code and implement something similar, or even just emulate the pages from the days of yore, I would be a very happy man.

Don't see how this is a bad thing.

Everything said by me is my humble opinion and nothing more, unless otherwise stated.
