I heard about mt gox and all that jazz haven't heard any news on bit coin lite coin or anything of the sort. so ya are those currencys still a thing or is it pretty much dead?

People are still mining, but the hype of it is gone, and so is GPU mining. However as the publicity dies down so does the value of cryptocurrency, who knows how long it will last

Hype is dead, value is dying, gpu mining is dead and all that is left is specialized hardware for mining. Computing clusters are still burning up the electricity for that currency.

Lol, I'll just assume you are talking about me. Discussion is always welcome, spreading misinformation and the general stupidity that goes on, not so much.

Don't bother even trying to mine with a GPU anymore.  You could run your quad GTX 980 SLI rig for 100 years and never get a single bitcoin from it.  that ship has sailed. The only way to mine effectively now is with ASICs.  Mining difficulty increases exponentially, so even ASIC hardware is obsolete in 6 months after release.

Mining is "still a thing", but mining of Bitcoin and Litecoin is mostly done by ASICs now. If you only know about Bitcoin and Litecoin (and maybe Dogecoin) then there is no point in thinking about mining. Mining on GPUs is still possible on altcoins with a novel hash such as the M5 or X11 hash, where ASICs don't (and may never) exist. Cryptocurrency as a concept isn't dead and most of the coins still have a community mining (or merge mining) them to keep the chain alive. Even old chains have been resurrected and most coin transactions still work very smoothly.

They get "pissy"? There is an awful lot of false info out there about cryptocurrencies and most people in the know are just trying to educate people about it. You are correct that GPU mining is pointless on Scrypt and SHA-256, but there are other hashes as well as PoS coins.

If you were running a similar level Radeon GPU you probably would have earned like $15 in that time. Nvidia was always a no go for mining.

to bad the electronic currency is dieing i hope it lives on, as companies like newegg start excepting the, it but the trouble with the us gov treating it like a commodity hurt it, but i has so much positive outlook for the world market, less centralized power to governments always results in the common man winning, it was cool while it lasted.

You can still mine with a GPU, but you will lose money from huge power costs.

You can mine with an ASIC, but your return on the investment might be minimal or non-existent.

If you can program your own ASIC, then you are in the money.

most mining is basically dead now it is insider trading you have to get on the mining train before it leaves.
