Amazon sells more than 100 million items on Prime Day

Amazon has reportedly sold over 100 million products during its Prime Day extravaganza sale which has roughly netted Amazon over $1 to $2 billion in revenue. This is despite the server issues that hampered the Amazon.com website briefly.

(Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) said online shoppers purchased more than 100 million products worldwide during its Prime Day sale, despite glitches on its mobile app and websites that prevented customers from placing orders.

 

This year Prime Day, Amazon’s summer marketing event, started on July 16 and lasted 36 hours.

 

The technical glitches lasted for at least two hours and was likely exacerbated by excessive demand and traffic volume, RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Mahaney said.

During the day it was confirmed that Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was announced as the world's richest man with a staggering 150 billion dollars. 

 

Amazon did not provide full sale details, but provided the estimate of 100m products. They also confirmed to Reuters they had sold over 1m Amazon Branded Smart Hubs (echo, dot, home) 

 

Not bad for a single day of hard work.

Same. I realised that it would actually be cheaper to buy from a local computer shop than from amazon (on a prime day), also the delivery is much faster.

I seen a few prime only GPU deals, but I haven't been paid yet otherwise I'd of grabbed one.

I bought a portable car jump starter and a vacuum

Regular shopping at whole foods got me a $10 credit for use on Prime day, so I had to use it.

Yeah...Every Amazon alexa device had been discounted that day so it doesn't surprise me. Amazon also had several "bundle" deals... one I clicked on out of curiosity was a galaxy S9 "bundle" (since I'm actively looking for a replacement phone) which included a SmartThings hub, echo, and some echo device with a screen... I wasn't interested as the $400 in savings was all about them giving away the smart devices.

 

I ended up just buying a contigo coffee mug.

Yeah, I wasn't going to break a strike just to save 30 euros on an ssd so none of those sales were mine.

I feel like the only guy that isn't giving into things like Alexa/Google Home.... I just don't really see the use of them. Yeah I know you can make a smart home with them, and that's swell. But I really couldn't care less about that stuff. I think what I fear is my home network getting compromised in some way, and some russian 9 year old running scripts on the things to DDOS a local power station or simply turn on my furnace and shut off my A/C in the middle of a hot summer :P

The statistics of that actually happening to you are probably higher than you winning the lottery twice... in a row lol.

Sure, right now. But the more lucrative the target, the more people look at it. From a hacker's perspective, smart home products are a great target since the user wouldn't even notice what was happening. There have been several articles about IoT devices getting hijacked and used for things like DDOS attacks. So, yeah, not really like winning the lottery, more like a matter of time.

Though tbh the point of access (your router) is where they access it from. If the entry point is secure then everything attached to that point is secure. Your already at risk by having a router by default, adding things to it won't make it any less secure.

A smart device is less likely and harder to hijack than your PC. These IoT devices getting hijacked is most likely because someone had their account hacked because their password was P@ssword and they were fucked with remotely. The router will block any direct traffic to that device.

 

Also DDoS is a risk after first plugging in your router. So......yea...its not a concern.

But it's not the IoT devices getting "hacked" directly, it's done THROUGH the routers. Secure your router and you're golden. The reason it went up is more than likely "hackers" being more determined to access those IoT devices to do more nefarious things. Which can be once again impeded by securing the Access Point.

Went up 91%? You do realize how low this metric is and you can even watch it live?

 

91% is based on a small number so its impact is minimal. This has nothing to do with IoT, this has to do with bandwidth increasing along with bot nets growing ON the IoT (PCs not alexas). 

 

Firewalls and routing prevent direct access to a device, its how the protocols work. You cant just talk to a device behind a router without it saying its good first. 

 

More access to more bandwidth means DDoS can be executed easier leading to more attacks. This is purely a scare tactic. I get alarms daily on DDoS attacks and our protection system at the edge has increased, what, maybe 3-4 attacks PER YEAR. (ISP engineer btw)
