Core i9 Macbook Pro throttles so hard its SLOWER than last years i7 model.

The XPS 15 also has a similar issue with the i9 but in all fairness it's not nearly as bad as the i9 in the mbp but still.

In a nutshell? Not very good. It's slower than the 8750H and is on average just a 13% improvement over the last one

Theres two things I would like to point out in that video, the i9 is barely throttling and most of the time is above base clocks. Secondly the scenario he showed was sustained CPU and GPU load which isn’t very realistic for this type of machine whereas the MacBook Pro is throttling just from CPU load, which is a realistic scenario.

Pretty poor considering other laptops show a 50% improvement on 7700HQ > 8750H and the MBP actually uses a slightly faster 8850H

The XPS has that one issue with VRM temps though. It’s been a thing with the XPS15 for a while.

I was excited that Apple had finally updated their MacBook Pros so I could upgrade my old MacBook Air that is literally slower than my phone. But they only upgraded the most expensive 13" to a quad core and the 15" models throttle so hard that they are slower than the old ones. Maybe it's time I bought a Windows laptop for the first time in ten years...

IMO you would be better off with linux, windows has way too many issues. It was less of a hassle to switch over than to put up with Microsoft's incompetence....

It is no surprise at all that an i9 can't be cooled by the MacBook Design.

That is not a matter of samplesize=1m but a matter of physic laws. It won't happen for any of the "affected" MacBooks and the percentage of the affected MacBooks will be about 100%, give or take zero.

 

Basically, once the machine needs to actually use the added performance, it looses said performance. That is as close to flat out lying in your face as it gets. You pay for something that can't happen, as the design does not allow it. And thinking that "they just did not consider everything" is a stretch at best. Honestly: They did not think someone would use their 5k+ machine for more than opening a txt-file?

plus even the old ones set at 90+ºc which is not a temperature that would lead to good longevity

Any laptop manufacturer that is supposedly:

 

1. Providing a high end performance level laptop - with high tier CPU/GPU etc

 

2. Not considering advanced cooling

 

Without undermining said 'high end performance' - e.g. throttling/energy management that basically makes the high end components worthless

 

Frankly, shouldn't be selling laptops at all.

They've ignored both the chicken and the egg - in how to design said 'high end performance level laptop'. WIth a design that simply does not work.

 

 

 

People. You can go out and get a rock, that makes a better paper-weight than one of these Macbooks.

They do have that, it would cause the CPU to throttle to 800MHz, I haven't seen any reports on the new XPS doing that although the VRM looks exactly the same (no airflow or heat-sink). The VRM throttling issue was always overly safe so maybe they modified the system to throttle at higher temperatures and throttle less, who knows. My XPS will start to throttle from that same thing on a hot day when both the CPU and GPU are under sustained load.

Offtopic here, but windows has gotten WAY better since windows 8.1. With Windows 10 the "issues" people talk about are mostly a thing of the past.

I was switching from Apple to Windows around 8.1 myself and used Linux for work. Honestly, Linux had more issues and Windows 10 just runs without any flaws for me.

On desktop it's not so bad but using windows on a laptop compared to MacOS there is a big difference.

Windows 10 is really good and refined now.. they have had a lot of major updates since it was released.

My family members in general have way more problems than me, but that is more down to incompetence than the operating system, and I bet if you put your family members on Linux they would have a significantly worse time.

Windows 8.1 has basically all the features of 10 without the useless spying garbage they added to 10. 10 is basically 8.1 reskinned with spyware added and DX12 support.

 

8.1 and 10 both handle SSDs and have better memory management than 7 but otherwise 10 just added a bunch of useless junk like torrenting updates by default and privacy invasion. Oh they added memory compression so potatoes with 4GB of RAM could "upgrade" to 10 when it installed itself like malware.

 

I specifically bought 8.1 pro in 2016 to avoid 10 until at least 2023.

If you look at Apple's history you'll realize this is exactly how Steve used to run it. Are we behind on the schedule? Rush it to market! Does it have a critical design flaw? Blame the customers for using it wrong! Can we make it look slightly better by crippling it? Go ahead!

I dont think so. Its way harder to break linux than windows. Especially if i dont give them the password for the admin account .

I wouldn't say good as each large update brings more garbage trying to connect you to microsoft someway but they have added nice things since launch

Idk, under Steve all of their stupid moves were less stupid hardware wise imo. I used to say it had nothing to do with steve, but recent years ive changed my mind 
I'd like to think steve jobs would abuse the team a little harder, treat them shittier to get things done. Like when a deadline is coming, tim cook probably doesn't threaten them enough. Looks at them as people and stuff

Cook is probably a more forgiving person. Jobs is apparently hard to work with as he's a pretty strict person when it comes to product development.

 

Though to be honest, while the Jobs era had ridiculous products like that iPod Shuffle with no buttons, I don't think their products went to this level of absurdity. Well, except #AntennaGate
