Core i9 Macbook Pro throttles so hard its SLOWER than last years i7 model.

First reported by David Lee and is quickly making its way across the internet with MacRumors now making it's own post; the Core i9 version of the 2018 refresh of the Macbook Pro is see throttling so hard that it is slower than even the Quad Core i7 of last years model. Macbook Pro's have had issues throttling in the past but this is the first time I've ever seen one have issues holding even the base clock speed of the chip. This is a 300/400 USD upgrade that seems to be completely worthless if the programs that you use can actually utilize the 6 cores of the Core i9. The new 2018 Macbook Pro 15" all come with 6 core i7's standard starting at 2.2GHz with a 2.6GHz option available before the upgrade to the i9.

I can't defend Apple on this shit. 

 

Make the damn 15" models a little thicker, fit a real cooler in them and a bigger battery. 

 

(Still only give Thunderbolt 3 though because is best port)

Last gen was the perfect version of the Macbook Pro IMO.

Well the new 13” models are more powerful but without the dGPU. 

 

The new 15” got higher end parts that prodice more heat but didn’t radically change the cooling solution to at least maintain the same temps. 

 

The new 15” models are in theory awesome. But in practice the i7 model is the only one that makes sense.

As I’ve said in a status update, if Apple’s 15” MBP is a blind date, he can be described as a smooth talking, good looking and well dressed man but he’s going to have so much trouble doing pull-ups, deadlifts and bench presses because he’s simply weak. 

 

Let’s not forget the fsct that the 15” MBP struggles to maintain the base clock speed.

I can't call it pro when all the ports are type C and is too busy chasing thin and lite. The keyboard has 0 travel and has made my hands hurt when using it, not to mention it feels way worse than the older models. The touch bar is idiotic and should have gone above the function row. The other changes are great but the ones that they did change told me Apple is no longer a company that builds laptops that I am willing to buy which is sad after owning now 4 of them.

 

Edit - Oh shit. I forgot about Magsafe. Bring it back damnit. Best power connector to ever be put on a laptop.

It’s always going to be a trade off and you can’t make everyone be happy. 

 

This is the path Apple has decided to go on, they won’t turn around on it. That might mean losing some previously loyal customers, but to them, it’s worth it. 

 

Persoanlly I have always liked the new keyboards. That might be a result of my hand size and finger shape, but there are many out there like me. 

 

It all comes down to preference.

There's a good chance those types of people will have a dock anyway; I certainly have no interest in plugging in power, two monitors, a keyboard, a mouse, and ethernet every time I return to my desk.

Remember: Apple only has the fans kick in at a low RPM when the CPU exceeds 80^oC, because they would rather the Macbook cook itself than make a lot of noise.
