Mobvoi’s TicWatch Pro is going on sale today for $250, after being announced back in May. The TicWatch Pro puts a new twist on Wear OS smartwatches by adding in a second, low-power screen that’s meant to keep the watch running longer.

 

To make this trick work, Mobvoi placed a transparent FSTN LCD display (picture a traditional digital watch) on top of the watch’s primary OLED screen. The OLED screen is used to show the standard Wear OS interface. But when you aren’t using the watch, the OLED screen turns off and you’re then able to see the LCD above it, which displays the time and other information you might want at a glance, like fitness data.

 

Mobvoi estimates that you’ll get two days of battery life using the watch this way. When battery life is low, the watch will also prompt you to enter “Essential Mode,” which uses only the top display and some key sensors, while turning off Wear OS and all of the smart features (like notifications) that go along with it. Mobvoi estimates you’ll be able to get an additional three days of use out of the watch that way. Or, if you really want to, you can use it exclusively in Essential Mode from full charge and go for 30 days.

 

I think the best part of this Smartwatch is the 2 day normal use and 30 day essential use battery life. I want to get one and buy a metal strap for it.

I know right. A smartwatch that lasts 30 days if you only use it as a watch.

 

 

At the end of the day, this is still just another android wear watch, which I have zero interest in. I'm sure a majority of people would get the 5 days at most.

 

I just don't see the point of Wear watches anymore.

What problem do you have with android wear?

I've said that I don't see the point of wear watches in general (not only Android Wear).

It use to be for a accurate time piece but now its mostly a fashion item, smartwatches is a step in bring use back to them.

 

I personally like watches and enjoy wearing my titanium Seiko watch.

I'm still upset LG never released another smartwatch. The SW3 was great.

 

Specs are nice though (NFC, GPS, battery saving features, larger than normal battery.) and I think for this price I might finally upgrade. Heart rate monitor,

This strikes me as Mobvoi trying too hard... as is LG's rumored watch that combines a smartwatch screen with old-fashioned hands.  Might be nice in some circumstances, but you're not buying a smartwatch primarily for battery life.

 

I'm honestly concerned about the future of Wear OS.  It feels like the epitome of Google's perpetual mobile OS problem: it has zero clue how to foster Android on any device that isn't a phone.  Hence why you end up with smartwatches using two-year-old chips (because Google didn't make sure there was a steady flow of CPU upgrades) and vendors resorting to gimmicks like Mobvoi's.  Apple is walking away with the smartwatch market while Google is barely putting up a fight.

There are hints of a new LG watch.  It could be this weird duck that puts conventional watch hands above a smartwatch screen.  Rumors suggest that it might not have GPS or NFC, though, so it'd lose a lot of its appeal for serious users.

My samsung gear s2 classic already gets 2 days with it's top tier OLED display if I have always on enabled, I can get 3-4 days with it off. How does this improve on the existing technology

I'm pretty happy with my watch style already, if I just use it for time and notifications I can get two days out of it already but it is also a little limited in features I guess. This seems interesting though, but I doubt il upgrade tbh

Still blows my my that people expect a watch with anything other than an e-ink screen to get 30 days of battery life on such a small battery. Like do people have concept of how much displays draw along with services like BT, GPS, NFC...etc?

 

Until battery reaches a new tech this is the best you're are going to get.

If you use an apple watch as just a watch and notification viewer it lasts about 5 days. Which I think is plenty considering it takes less then 25 minutes to charge it from 0-100

the 30 days is not a non-smart watch mode, it will still give notifications and track stuff it just does not have a full feature display to give it full function. I assume its a button press away so you can get longer then a few days with a hybrid use.

Most smart watches fall in that range and with fast charging is full in 25 mins like you said. I am fine with charging my watch every 2-3 days. 

 

I just cant stand when people bitch about not getting 30 days of battery life.

Their is a type of smart watch called the hybrid watch that gives 30-60 days of battery with limited smart functions. most don't have a full screen or even any screen at all.

Got a few Citizen watches myself ... Chrono Perpetual A-T, and red/black and blue accent variants of the Ti + Ip.
