are ads on websites getting out of control?

i'm noticing that much more websites nowadays put a large amount of moving ads on display, and i'm wondering what you people think of it. 

 

i honestly don't like my macbook's fans ramping up because i load a webpage.. 

 

and i know i know, people will suggest adblock, but i don't want to use that.

because i think creators and website owners deserve money. i just don't like the way some websites do it. 

 

for example i'm totally fine with ads on for example youtube or on here because i get a lot of enjoyment out of the content.

You can install an ad blocker and then just whitelist the sites that you want to support

And, If you want to do your "Part" in watching the Ads.

 

If you are going to let your Macbook Fans "Speed Up" just to help A content creators Make more money, I feel like most people on youtube, that are running the adds, are not hurt for money, So you are perfectly fine to use Ad Blocker.

If you want to continue to watch the 30 second unskippable adds, Be my guest, But with Ad block you can also tuen off Some ads, so it blocks some while also keeping some up.

i know, but i want to support all websites, just not on a laptop that runs at 70 degrees with an hour of battery life because i have 20 tabs with ads open... 

now that is partly my fault because my laptop is 7 years old, but still.

Yes, I was vehemently opposed to adblockers not long ago.  Philosophically I still am,  but nowadays ads have gotten so insidious, i.e pretending to be a part of the website you're visiting and some of them carry malware payloads.  Making it is too easy to incidentally click on one and the results can be damaging, so adblockers are essential. 

 

I believe if a website cannot control the content on their own site to make the ads safe, then Given a choice I will not visit that site.

yeah that too. although malware doesn't bother me so much because i have good antivirus, and i never click on ads, but i will agree that for someone who isn't very into tech it can be a big issue.

You could simply google it yourself. EDIT: Maybe it wont be a simple google, Most people dont want to turn off "HALF" the Ads on a page.

There are ad blockers that allow some ads. You can opt out of it if you like. For example...

Personally I'm okay with ads on websites. What I'm not okay with are things like tracking. I opt out of "personalized" ads whenever I can. Still that isn't enough... The world of mining your personal data to sell is no joke. 

 

• There are things like electronic device fingerprinting which uses unique identifiers on devices to track what devices you're using and possibly own as well as possible information about software, firmware, OS, etc. 
• Ultrasonic tracking which actually uses your microphone on your phone or computer to listen for high pitch sounds embedded in certain ads in order to see if you're watching them. Smart home speakers are notorious for doing this...Alexa knows what you're watching...Oh she knows.
• Script trackers which may issue a cookie themselves or inject code into a harmless cookie in order to snoop on your browsing habits.
• Bait links are something we are all probably familiar with...ever go to download something from a website and have like 5 "Download Now" buttons all over the place? Which one do you click? If you don't know and click the wrong one you either go to another more obnoxious ad site, or worse you could be hit with malicious scripts or malware...

I'm sure this isn't all there is either. I figure if you can sponsor someone a different way it is worth the extra cost to save myself from the torture of sifting through website ads. A lot of YouTubers have something like Patreon or use the "sponsor" that YouTube offers.

I suggest running any file you download for the first time through virustotal (BTW the file provided turned up a clean result)

Even after you download it make a habit of scanning it with anti-malware and anti-virus. There have been cases of legit files being changed after a website hack.

I don't really mind ads as long as it's not your face, covering the content you want front and center and not used as a vector for malicious activities like drive by download malware attacks, phishing, and cryptojacking.

adblock plus, adblock origin, opera built in adblocker, and pihole. You will never see an ad on any service including ones in free spotify and hulu. After ads were getting injecting with javascript ransomware and malware ads being displayed on Youtube it's more of a security thing
