Move aside Oculus, introducing the Avegant Glyph: A retinal micro-mirror projection into your brain

nicehat

medienfoto_243_gross.jpg

Taking a page out of Oculus’ horrible naming handbook, the Avegant Glyph also sounds like a video-game franchise or multi-billion dollar ICBM targeting software. Unlike Oculus, however, Glyph doesn’t feature any display device at all — with Glyph, the only place the image ever really exists is in your mind. The technology is called Virtual Retinal Display (VRD), and it uses a projector which sends its image directly onto the retina, in much the same way that a CRT television projects a picture onto the glass of the screen. Here, though, there is no slab of glass to absorb and re-emit light into the real world; the only place Glyph’s VRD images ever exist is inside the eye of the user.

Unlike “true” VR displays like Oculus Rift, Glyph will only fill a portion of your vision with its picture. A glance down at your keyboard will still work, as will a glance over to the side at a friend’s face; Glyph is meant to work with the real world, not to completely obscure it.

So que in the hungry competition eager to get a slice of Oculus's pie. Does this sound interesting to you? Which has more potential as an immersive conduit into a 3d world, Oculus or this?

Sounds really interesting. I'd like to try this out along with the Rift to see which one I like better. This kind of VR headset has the potential to be much smaller as well. I could easily see this being the size of regular glasses in a future iteration.

I won't say it's better than the Rift, because I dunno if it is or not. Really it'll come to personal preference when people go to buy a VR device, but competition is a good thing, so I openly welcome this new technology.

And to think 5 years ago no one gave a shit about VR. Now everyone wants to make VR happen.

Interesting. Not really sure how well the design will fly though. It doesn't look like there's any height adjustment to the headphones.

Given the massive range of human head sizes, ear placement, nose size, it'll pose a problem especially since it has to rest on the nose to support itself in game mode.

One of my biggest pet peeves is an ill fitting set of headphones.

I can see people having a "normal conversation" with this on and playing some scary game like amnesia during the conversation.

One minute they'll be all cool like conversing then flipping out and running away from the conversation completely.

This is a completely different product than the rift, so I don't get why you say "move aside, oculus"...

This doesn't seem to really be a competitor to the rift, they both do different things.

This gives a great way to view media, but not a full immersive VR environment. Its more a competitor for the Sony HMZs, the stuff to watch films and such on than being a full VR headset. It will do well against the Sony stuff, should be much cheaper.

Price I saw was around $499.

Don't like the intergrated headphones either. If we have nice headphones, let us use them. I understand why its done though, appeals more to the mass market, a complete device only needing the input.

terrible thread title

this is a different take on "VR", clearly not a completely superior implementation - just different

i think the biggest difference is that you wont be looking at a screen with this, it will actually look like you are there(if it works as intended)
