[Opinion] Keurig

So I just got the Keurig K-Select coffee maker. It was surprisingly affordable at around $120 (cad). But I can see why because the K-cups cost $0.70 (cad) per unit. So it’s like a cheap printer/expensive ink type of deal. So far I tried Nabob, Donut Shop and Marley K-cups. They all kinda tasted like the same, sort of bland, okay-ish coffee. From memory, the best Keurig coffee I had was from a Kahlua pod. Do you have any other K-cup suggestions? It would be cool to see some kind of Espresso pod, like Tassimo.

I wouldn’t call myself a coffee snob, but I grind my own beans with a coffee mill and either use a Melitta pour-over or a Flair coffee maker. The Flair is a goofy looking espresso maker for masochists. But it makes good coffee I guess. I also used Tassimo before and I think I like it more. But I can’t say exactly why?

So what do you think of Keurig? And are there K-cups with more “oomph”? I am eyeballing Lavazza pods. How are those?

Can’t go wrong with Tim’s. I almost bought Starbucks but got Nabob last time instead. I wanted to save $1 LOL.

Keurigs are nice to a certain degree.  Myself though, I cheap out and found a different brand brewer in a thrift store for 20 bucks.  :P   It can do K-cups too.  Mostly I just use it to brew up hot water to do my tea though.

But yeah, buying the cups add up real quick.  Reason if I do bother buying any, I go to Sams Club or some place where I can buy one of those bulk packs on sale.

They're mega convinient, thats for sure. You can also get refillable cups so you can use your own grind which I really dig.

Only issue I have is mine only dispenses a maximum of 10 oz. for the coffee. :P

As for brands, there is one that does a nice Sumatran style coffee. Forgot the name but maybe look out for the stronger brews if the regular stuff isnt cutting it.

The refillable cup totally defeats the purpose of the Keurig! I may as well make coffee the hard way because it takes the same amount of effort. I am talking about my Flair of course.

Yeah! With the flair I have to boil water for 3 minutes. Grind the beans. Heat the cylinder in hot water, pack the coffee and then press the lever with all of my strength because I always grind the beans too fine.  And that just makes 1 shot of espresso LOL

You can get a reusable k-cup to fill with your own ground coffee if you want to save a bit on that side of things. But at that point, why buy an expensive keurig machine when you could've just bought a hot water dispenser. (which is what the Keurig essentially is)

LOL. I threw my Aeropress in the trash when I didn’t get a proper seal using the upside down procedure. I got hot water and loose coffee grounds all over my counter and inside my cabinets.

This Flair coffee maker is essentially an Aeropress with a giant lever for even moar pressure!!!

Those K-cups are not recyclable, just so you know.

I believe they cant get the top seal off the plastic. So they may advertise its recyclable to look good in the public eye, but its not. Its just false advertising.

I prefer coffee presses, tea balls, and a kettle. I've bought two Keurigs, but after a week or two I end up thinking "why the fuck am I taking 30 extra seconds to fill this thing with water, tea, and a mug when I could just make multiple cups of tea or mate with the stove?".

That’s not even the worst part! They’re $0.61~$1.01 (CAD) per pod!

I think I will be using my Flair again soon. The Keurig was a gift for my GF. It’s an expensive one at that.

That's why everyone should by Tassimo...though, actually recycling them is a whole other matter.

Truth. Especially tea, when it's generally already bagged for you.

I'd much rather buy a nice kettle than a Keurig.

I don’t get the point of a nice kettle. They’re all functionally the same.

Nicer electric ones boil the water a little faster, tend to have heavier bases, nicer materials. Mine has adjustable temperatures.
