I just hope this doesn't suddenly mean now everyone is going up to the 1000 dollar price point for new smartphones.  Granted I'll be using my S8+ for as long as I can since its paid off.  Also as good as the X might be if I want to use iOS I'll just get an 8 that seems more sensible to me.

I don't buy the "people buy iphones for a status symbol" argument. I have no idea how the US market is tbf but here in Sweden half the people run around with an iPhone, many with current gen. Who buys something extremely common as a status symbol?  Better to buy something a little more uncommon no?

it's not the device, it's the company.

 

It's the Apple logo. Basically. Like on Nike shoes or Adidas tracksuits or RayBan sunglasses or BMW car.

I think it's mainly a North American thing. Here in Canada too, having a MacBook is sort of a status symbol too, same with like Herschel backpacks for example. A lot of people buy it because it's the trendy thing to do. You know it's a status symbol when you have younger people stubbornly refuse to use anything that's not Apple, claiming "it's too complicated to use". Bruh, you have moms and grannies using Androids everyday for WhatsApp, how hard can it be? If they can figure it out, so can you since you grew up with technology.

Porsche Design is part of Porsche, so it's the same brand. Just different division.

 

We all know Porsche, and associate it with luxury. More people know Porsche than Huawei.

 

The design is amazing. The label on the front, yeah, whatever, you have to tell people somehow it's a Porsche Design phone, right? On the back it looks even nicer. The nice version of the Mate RS is the red version, though reserved to China. You're not paying premium for more storage, you're paying premium for being a pioneer in future of technology. Inscreen fingerprint sensor. Ridiculous storage. Amazing crafting. Actively cooled SoC.

 

iPhone X just looks cheap. Looks like any other phone out there at this point. P20 Pro feels good in hand. Mate RS feels even more amazing. Even if it's heavier, it feels lighter.Sharper edges make it easier to hold

 

 

i guess it's not everybody's cup of tea, but for me, and those of us who bought a Huawei Mate RS Porsche Design, this is the best smartphone you can get right now, and that's what we are paying for. 

 

now, you prefer iphone x? sure, ok. It's subjective, nothing new. We'll never agree on what is luxury is and what isn't. Don't like it? don't buy. But mate rs belongs in the luxury case.

edit: i'll take some extra time to actually explain. If you're a regular dude or teenager, you will not get the Mate RS, because, indeed, it doesn't strike as luxury/exclusivity immediately. You will get an iPhone X. Because everybody knows what it is, and we all associate Apple with this "exclusivity" thing. So, if I were a regular person trying to look cool, I would indeed get the iPhone X. Like the nike shoes or adidas tracksuits, right? Or just ANY regular iPhone, really. The 7, the 8, whatever.

 

But if you have money, and are in "those" circles of people with money and do the stereotypical rich people stuff of golf, beach, expensive car, big house, etc, you'll be inclined in considering this phone, especially if you know about "Porsche Design". You would be surprissed how many people buy sunglasses or clothes from them.

Porsche Design is a subsidiary, but it's technically distinct from Porsche the car maker.  That's all I'm really saying.

 

I see that Porsche Design on the chin as somewhat obnoxious -- I don't need an obvious reminder of who made my phone every time I check Instagram.  It's not incredibly offensive, to be clear, but it's both unnecessary overall and unnecessarily large.  The LG and Samsung logos are models of restraint by comparison.

 

I just think Apple does luxury better (and let's face it, a phone that starts at $999 is a luxury device, if only just).  It's not only that it embodies tasteful restraint, it's that you can better see where your money is going.  An iPhone X costs more than an 8 Plus because of the screen, Face ID, the upgraded second camera and the use of stainless steel instead of aluminum.  I know 512GB of storage costs a lot in a smartphone, but Huawei's pricing for the Mate RS makes it pretty clear that the storage is only a small chunk of the added cost; the rest is all rolled into cosmetics, and the cosmetics don't really stand out.

 

That's the thing: luxury is supposed to either provide more features, to draw attention or both, and it's hard to see the Mate RS doing much of either.  A regular P20 Pro is going to get more looks.

There's more to a phone than just specs. Sure people buy it as a status symbol that's nothing new. People have been showing off wealth since the beginning of time. If you don't like it no one is forcing you to buy it.

let me be clear: I agree with you.

 

the logo on the front isn't for the owner, it's just to let everybody around you know that you have a porsche design device. that's it. literally.

 

i guess? i listed specs above anyway, of the extra you get. But you are paying the "Porsche name" with a big chunck of money. If it was an upgraded P20Pro (p20....elite?), then it would probably sit ~1000 euros or a bit more, so it's easily 400 euros that goes into the "porsche" branding. Like on the mate 10 porsche edition. Different body, same specs, double the price. Which is normal, really. "Luxury" has always been like this.

 

the most important is being happy of your purchase though. If you're going to spend 1550 euros to show off your wealth, I'm sorry but that's dumb. And i'm happy with it so that's what matters to me. It would be interesting to see what other mate rs owners say, but knowing where most of the porsche design sales happen (rich arab countries), it's easy to say it's mainly rich people wanting to show off. Rich people owning a few porche's

Schrodinger's thought experiment stipulates both researchers are true until the box is opened when one becomes true.  Guessing or average doesn't help.  Which means until apple open the box (or another way is found to open the box), then no one can argue if it's true or not because it is both true and not rue at the same time.

yes i'm supporting you, yeah. Android is trash. Only thing saving it in my case is the heavy EMUI customization, otherwise I would probably  not be using a phone.
