TN panels yay or nay?

I use a 180hz TN panel, I hear a lot of bad news about TN panels but I don't see why? It seems just fine for 1080p gaming.

Does anyone have any greater detail to share of the pro's and cons of a TN panel?

tn panels are cheaper if not the cheapest panels on the market

 

if you already have it you're fine

I mean if all you ever used was a TN panel it is kinda obvious you'll not know why people prefer IPS over it.

Oh I've used an IPS in the past, but i'm using an ACER XB241H at the moment for my 1080p setup and can't see a huge difference in quality. I guess it's subjective to the manufacturer/model not just the type of panel

I'm guessing the only real reason why anyone would use a TN over IPS is the response times?

that is why professional monitors always opt for IPS and other premium panels

Don't under-estimate the price difference. Up to about 2 or 3 years ago, I said I'll never get a TN. Most of the displays I've got since then are TN. It comes down to, if I want similar in IPS, the price goes up by a factor of 2 or more. I don't want it quite that much.

Agreed, that's why I went with a TN. I did a little research before hand and took the plunge, I can't say I have any issues and the pricing made it all the better

NAY, TN panels suck, I won't buy another TN as long as I can afford not to.

Almost all of my monitors have TN panels. IMO TN isn't too bad for normal usage etc. but colors look horrible when compared to my old CRT monitors

For gaming I think it is fine. Colours are fine, I have no complaint with mine. The problem I find is that I use my monitor as my TV and the angle from my comfy chair, or my bed, up to my desk, means even with the monitor tilted down the picture is very dark. If you're sitting at a desk it's fine, further away it really kind of sucks.

 

For reference I have an Asus MG278Q think its called something like that. 1440p 144Hz with freesync

A lot of whether to use TNs or not boils down to what you use them for. I'm not a gamer. I've been really happy with my ASUS VG248QE 24" monitors, enough so I'm keeping the three I already had and bought four more for when I set up for six monitors (before you flame my math, one is a spare in case ASUS decides to discontinue them shortly before one decides to die). I had to fool with the settings, though. I'm color blind so looked up settings on the "interwebz" and tried a few before settling down on one that looked good to me. Even then, I had to reduce the brightness somewhat. My blacks are black and my whites are white enough for me (any whiter and they would hurt my eyes). Of the seven, only one of the original three had any bad pixels. It started out with three stuck on blue. I was able to use an exercising program to get two of them unstuck. The remaining one is near the top and is unnoticeable unless I'm looking for it (and, depending what is on the screen, sometimes not even then).

That's the only complaint I really have, the viewing angle is pretty bad if I want to view from anywhere other than at my desk

ASUS makes monitors with TN panels more color accurate than an IPS. I have one, looks better than the wifes Acer IPS G-SYNC. All depends on the model.

True that. My ASUS VG248QEs also have limited viewing angles. However. I only view them from my desk so it's not an issue.

At the moment I use both TN(VG248QE) and IPS(IPS234) on my main PC. TN is for gaming since it's 144Hz and any content viewing like movies and YouTube videos are done on the IPS panel.

I watch movies from my TV. YouTube videos look great from my TN monitors.
