That type of usage isn't really a problem and they expect it. Also no, not unless they have power meters on each room which would be too costly to bother. But if they needed to find out there are ways, current clamps.

Yeah but if you do that I don't think the University is gonna complain about abusing their free electricity since you're creating your own.. Not sure how your neighbours gonna feel when you cover their windows with solar panels tho.

Oh  I definitely did this on the first mining wave years ago (I didn't even live on campus), and so did a ton of people I know.

A little sensationalist to say it 'hogs networks", misleading/misinformation really.

 

Also people forget that many dorms have a PTAC unit for individual climate control (electric heat and ac combo in wall usually under window), and that uses a lot more electricity than miners. They expect high electricity usage in each dorm and really often don't look into it, so even if you're worried about being caught all you have to do is just not run them at the same time. In summer run it when you're out of the room in winter the miner introduces the about the same amount of heat into the room as the power it consumes anyway. It's not like most of these dorms are wired with individual metering for individual rooms anyway.

 

The mention of a VPN IS correct, if they want to stop it they'll try to detect certain traffic or block things (not the amount, it doens't use much). Detecting power usage is usually not an option for anything smaller than a building or section of a building.

Buddy and I started doing this ourselves a few months ago. I mined until I had 1 ZClassic, then the market crashed and I haven't tried since.

An important thing to remember is that in a LOT of regions resident's in post secondary dormitories have a LOT less rights than tenants would in normal housing in the same region.  As a local example, here in Ontario we have the Residential Tenancy Act, which contains all kinds of renter's protections from abuses, sudden eviction, and certain rules.  Even 'no pets' clauses in a lease are void and unenforceable in Ontario where the RTA applies.  Dormitories and other speciality residences like hospices and nursing homes and some other categories have most of those regulations not applying to them.  In short, if you're caught leeching the dorms power, you could find yourself exposed to a LOT more risk than if you were just doing so in an apartment.

college dorms- get treated like shit for renting half a room for twice the effective monthly rate of a local house, and pay extra for parking your car.

This is why I never had a reason to live on campus.

Collages often have rules where if you are a freshman or sophomore you MUST either live with a relative or rent dorms, which I don't even know how that's legal...you're an adult you can live where the fuck you want. Anyone smart just lies about where they live.

Well I just used the stock cooler with the P4 and it is hot. Same goes for Intel's first dual core CPU which is the Pentium D that also sucked in thermals because it's just two P4's glued together.

I don't see what the issue is. In the U.S. at least, you are paying for your power, internet connection, etc and for the most part (bar torrenting), you can do what you want with it.
