FBI dragged its feet to force Apple to weaken encryption

DoctorWho1975

Well this is getting even more interesting:

http://reason.com/blog/2018/03/28/report-fbi-officials-dragged-feet-breaki

Quote

The purpose of the Justice Department's investigation was to determine whether then–FBI Director James Comey spoke accurately in February 2016, when he testified before Congress that the FBI was unable to unlock Farook's phone. The report concludes that Comey was telling the truth at the time. But it also highlights a fair amount of foot-dragging. (The FBI waited til mid-February before looking for outside assistance in unlocking the phone.) The chief of the cryptographic unit, it concludes, did not want a third-party solution. The chief wanted to use the case to force Apple's compliance:

[Executive Assistant Director Amy Hess] became concerned that the [Cryptographic and Electronic Analysis Unit] Chief did not seem to want to find a technical solution, and that perhaps he knew of a solution but remained silent in order to pursue his own agenda of obtaining a favorable court ruling against Apple. According to EAD Hess, the problem with the Farook iPhone encryption was the "poster child" for the Going Dark challenge.

"Going Dark" is law enforcement jargon used to describe their inability to bypass encryption and cybersecurity tools to engage in surveillance or access data of targets of investigation

This just shows how underhanded the various 3 letter agencies are, anything they can do to ruin American freedoms, they do. The duopoly party situation is only a smokescreen, you are either in power.. or you aren't. If you aren't, your fucked.

I thought that was par for the course,  When you have a case you want furthered,  exaggerating (either with time or words) your position to get a better result is hardly underhanded.   Its a widely used technique to add weight to your argument.

Which undermines their argument they hadddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd to have what was on that phone. Because if you can use it to further your agenda while others may die then you really didn't the information at all.

Others may die?  farook was already dead no one was going to die as far as we know,  The FBI wanted to use a resolved case to further their agenda to get apple to weaken encryption.  This is all pretty black and white stuff.   Obviously the FBI don't want to pay 3rd parties to do what  they thought they could get apple to do for free.   It's just exaggerating the situation to further their cause.   I am surprised people didn't think that was happening given what's at stake from their perspective.

What are you arguing? FBI stated X, its obvious they were lying and by lying tried to pull down encryption on a whole wackload of devices. I guess that's not a problem right?

It's problem for sure, but I never said anything about that let alone that it wasn't a problem.  I said it was common practice to exaggerate your issues when arguing to further your cause.   This is nothing new and not what you would call underhanded because we all know what they want, they have outright said that's what they wanted many times over.   Underhanded suggests they lied about being able to crack it (they didn't, they had to get a 3rd party in to do it). Underhanded suggests they only have self interests to gain from such a practice, when the reality is the issue is a lot deeper than that.

EDIT: underhanded also suggests a certain degree of trying to attain something secretly, which they haven't, they have been very open about wanting back doors in everything.

Yeah everyone called this at the time. John McAfee went on air and told them exactly how to get into the phone, they simply kept to their script.

Yeah it's RT news, but I'd trust McAfee's crazy ass over the government any day of the week.

Google are compliant with the FBI. If they see any suspect activity (terrorist activity, child porn, people trafficking, etc) they hand it right over, most likely because they, like other people such as myself, actually want to eradicate these horrible things.

You don't get to do that by violating the rights of innocent people. Never mind doing that by putting innocent people in harms way by creating vulnerabilities in software that the majority of the population use.

Violating peoples rights "for their own good" is the stuff totalitarian regimes are made of. Read a history book.

Sometimes measures like that have to be put in place. I mean, look at the sheer amount of criminals that are probably still walking free, can you honestly say you feel safe when there's potential terrorists on the loose that could be gotten rid of through these new measures? We live in a time where sometimes measures like this must be taken, even if it does disgruntle the rest of society, the blame for these measures shouldn't be put on government agencies but rather the people out there who are doing wrong. Blame them for you not being able to have privacy.

Considering that I supposedly live in a democracy (Or a republic, which is a type of democracy, if you want to be pedantic), I can very well blame the government. I can blame them for wanting stupid shit like this and not knowing what the hell they're actually doing.

Forcing major software developers to put backdoors into operating systems and other pieces of software, will catch zero terrorists, and probably lead to mass identity theft because people will find and use those backdoors.

As much as I hate to play this card, you're talking to someone with a degree in Network Security. Not a great one admittedly, but this is basic level operational security kind of shit. And I can say with 100% confidence that the FBI is either supremely incompetent, or entirely dishonest about their reasoning in this case.

You're blind. Terrorists and other criminals use technology too you know. Identity theft happens nearly every day on mass scales anyway so it wouldn't make that much difference in terms of fraud and identity theft anyway. Think I'd give up a silly bit of electronic safety any day rather than my real life safety.

Okay, enjoy having your credit card accounts stolen when some kid in (insert random third world country here) gets access to your banks software and steals all of your money.

Because that is THOUSANDS of times more likely to happen than you actually being injured by a terrorist attack.

At this point I'm highly inclined to believe you are either incredibly naive and inexperienced (nothing wrong with that.) or a paid troll.

Any weakness the government imposes on the populace is a weakness that can be exploited by wrongdoers.

You may as well ask every house to have an door that cannot be locked that says "GOVERNMENT USE ONLY." I'm sure criminals would happily abide by it and try the locked front door or break a window instead.

Thank you.

Starting to feel like everyone's on goddamned LSD and I'm the only (semi)sane person left.

Scare people enough with a couple boogeyman and they will willingly give up their freedom and whatever else you ask of them.

Those 3letter fellas already admit they listen to users without consent, use voice analisys which is so state of the art that voice scramblers do nothing, voice altering does nothing. They have analitical software on every major server in the states and, perhaps, the world. And all the other magic tools aint nobody heard about.

And, as a matter of fact, apple complies with requests all the time. They get stubborn when agencies ask for this shit in public since its very damaging to do so publicly for the image of the company who prides itself on keeping its users safe and secure

You're blind. Terrorists and other criminals use technology too you know. Identity theft happens nearly every day on mass scales anyway so it wouldn't make that much difference in terms of fraud and identity theft anyway. Think I'd give up a silly bit of electronic safety any day rather than my real life safety.

If you are willing to give up freedom for the sake of security then you deserve neither.
