For my first LTT post, here's my contribution:

FZii2im.jpg

Trident 1MB VGA card.

I don't have any pics or parts from my first "gaming PC", but it was a 286-20 with 2 x 1MB SIPP modules and a 20MB MFM hard drive and a 300 baud modem.  It was bliss.

Got a little bit of a bios corruption or the gpu is having some issues

IMG_3740.JPG

I'd say that's the GPU. Though at least most of the image is there, and the driver is loaded correctly....my Geforce 3/4 (can't remember-tossed it in a draw and left it) is stuck at 4 bit colour, 640x480. With full blown checkerboard artifacting.

Behold the glorious PEGATRON. Salvaged from a friends HP desktop and Frankensteined into... something else.

I still have this thing in a box because I don't know what to do with it. ? It's super dusty because my old case didn't have filters on it. ?

I still have an old 8086 PC stashed in my attic too, it was working... (I`ll check when I get a free moment and post pics if it still does).

I`ll probably need to sweep the dust of it first though :)

IMG_0909.JPG

Edit:- Apparently not...someone in my household decided to throw it out....?

They left the monitor, some old cases and bits of detritus for me...so for the record, here they are:-

(a bit of a come down from a working 8086 but hey-ho, whatever...)

At midnight tonight, one of the items I've been lusting after for a long time, will have the auction end, and I"m feeling good about it.

A Compaq Portable III (pic is an exmaple)

compaqiii.jpg

It's highly yellowed, anyone have any experience restoring the yellow to an original colour?

I'm considering (but only considering right now) making it more like those old dirty terminals you see in Fallout games, but I am yet undecided. I may take it to work and see if I can connect it to our network (I'm the IT person here, so I can get away with such silly things)

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Make sure to put a small fan on that chipset heatsink so it doesn't burn up, because the heatsink is actually insufficient for the wattage used by the GeForce 9100 underneath when used passively! ?  I'm honestly amazed it's lasted this long.  Before we were into our current product line, we used to sell hundreds of these boards because they kept dying.

Just a few of my retro computer machines and parts... and one of my 486 motherboards is the model with an actual GUI for the BIOS. I wonder if @LinusTech ever happened to of seen one of those beauties before? ?

By the way, I can capture any footage of the BIOS directly if any one would like a clearer shot, since I can capture VGA output easily. :)

Now for the rest of the goodies.

What's the second socket for? The SX means the FPU is disabled right?

I believe it was for a separate chip to support FPU when you have the 486SX installed. Like the 487, IIRC.

All I know is, who ever originally sold or installed that board with the 486SX is a complete dick. Its got no L2 cache...and even just 128KB made a huge difference.

Unfortunately many of the Gateway 2000 boards I've come across are like that, lacking the L2 cache. From what I've found out a while back they used some odd standard for the cache chips. So any of the ones I have on another board simply won't work on these. Which is a shame because I really wanted to run my Pentium Overdrive in one of these Gateway 2000 machines I have...

I mean it does work, but my 486DX4 machine still kills the Pentium Overdrive in raw performance just because of the lack of L2 cache in the machine it's installed in. While that 486DX4 has plenty of L2 cache on hand.

I definitely agree with how much of a difference it makes, it's quite amazing, yet frustrating at the same time. ?

@ReeseRiverson That's an amazing collection! You make my collection look like complete crap in comparison, I don't think I have a system that was built for anything older than XP at the moment. ?

I'd love to have more stuff, mainly a decent CRT monitor for starters, but I don't have anywhere to store anything else and people already call me a hoarder. ?

I've got a small stack next to me from that era as well.

Even my laptop's 5400RPM drive is faster than those.

I've got some older stuff laying around but I had these handy for a different thread. I imagine it would boot up if I had XP installed and some RAM in it, I have the RAM around somewhere.
