Posted February 28, 2018 Huh feels strange that someone is using an Atlas V to launch a satellite tbh, but I guess they REALLY want it up there I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays... nothing, it just sits there collecting dust... It's going to be 35,000 KM above the planet surface. For context, Low Earth Orbit is anything under 2000 KM altitude. Most of these contracts are won quite a while before a launch, and there can be many factors involved, including pre-existing relationships with the launch partner. Falcon 9 could have no doubt delivered the payload. The GOES-S satellite weighs about 6100 lbs. The Falcon 9 can deliver over 18,000 lbs to GTO (Geotransfer orbit - where the payload would often be inserted into Geostationary orbit). Hell, the Falcon 9 can actually deliver over 8000 lbs to Mars, so it could have handled this mission. Reliability wise, the Falcon 9 has had more failures, but it's also trying to do significantly more things - and they've only ever had what... one failed launch w/ a real payload? I suspect corporate negotiations, or politics is what landed the ULA the contract.
