Source 2: https://www.techpowerup.com/241669/intel-unveils-discrete-gpu-prototype-development

  • At the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference in San Francisco, Intel unveiled slides showing the direction its discrete GPU development is headed since head-hunting AMD’s Raja Koduri

  • They appear to be scaling up their existing iGPU architecture, and bolstering it with mechanisms to sustain high clock speeds better.

  • The first 14nm dGPU prototype is a 2-chip solution.

    • The first chip contains the GPU itself and a system agent;

    • the second chip is an FPGA that interfaces with the system bus.

  • Consists of 1.5 billion transistors.

    • Nvidia's GP102 GPU that's found in the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is built on a 16nm process and has 12 billion transistors.

    • The GP108 found in the GT1030 has a similar 1.8 billion transistors.

  • Following media speculation about the slides, Intel has stated:

    • "Last week at ISSCC, Intel Labs presented a research paper exploring new circuit techniques optimized for power management.

    • The team used an existing Intel integrated GPU architecture (Gen 9 GPU) as a proof of concept for these circuit techniques.

    • This is a test vehicle only, not a future product. While we intend to compete in graphics products in the future, this research paper is unrelated.

    • Our goal with this research is to explore possible, future circuit techniques that may improve the power and performance of Intel products."

FSLabs intentionally installs DRM to steal passwords

Source 1: Sierra Fox https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/898030-fslabs-intentionally-installing-drm-that-can-steal-your-passwords/

Source 2: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2018/02/flight-sim-devs-say-hidden-password-dump-tool-was-used-to-fight-pirates/

  • Flight simulator mod developer FlightSimLabs (FSLabs) has been caught distributing "malware" with an add-on package for Lockheed Martin's popular Prepar3d simulation.

  • The add-on contains a file called test.exe that uses a "Chrome Password Dump" tool to extract passwords saved in the Chrome Web browser.

  • In response to community uproar, FSLabs head Lefteris Kalamaras revealed that the malware does not "reveal any sensitive information of any customer who has legitimately purchased our products" (emphasis in original).

  • The file, he insists, is only activated if the installer sees a serial number that matches a database of pirated numbers found floating around on the Internet.

    • Not only that, the tool was only activated in the case of one specific pirate who had been identified as creating and distributing illicit registration keys via an offline key generation tool.

    • "We even went so far as to figure out exactly who the cracker was, but unfortunately we could not be able to enter the registration-only websites he was using to provide this information to other pirates,"

    • "We found through the IP addresses tracked that the particular cracker had used Chrome to contact our servers, so we decided to capture his information directly—and ONLY his information (obviously, we understand now that people got very upset about this—we're very sorry once again!) as we had a very good idea of what serial number the cracker used in his efforts."

  • Justified?

    • This brings is a significant reduction in production cost

  • IoT devices will now be able to have cellular identities

  • And if these chips ever make it into smartphones, Enterprise customers could switch an entire fleet of phones from one carrier to another without the end user doing anything.

  • The SIM is stored in a secure enclave with enhanced hardware security like Arm CryptoIsland.

  • The new technology is also said to be GSMA Embedded SIM Specifications compliant.

Google exposes Microsoft Edge security flaw

Source 1: SC2Mitch https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/898154-google-exposes-security-flaw-in-microsoft-edge-before-a-patch-is-ready/

Source 2: https://www.neowin.net/news/google-exposes-security-flaw-in-microsoft-edge

  • Back in November 2017, google’s Project Zero security researchers found a “medium” severity flaw in Microsoft Edge.

  • The researchers notified Microsoft, who were given a 90 day grace period to fix the big before Google would disclose it to the public.

  • After 90 days, Microsoft was granted an additional 14 days so that they could roll out a patch with their scheduled February Patch Tuesday

  • But Microsoft missed that too, expressing that the bug was more complex than initially believed.

  • Google has said this about the bug:

    • This issue is a security mitigation bypass and cannot be exploited on its own.

    • An attacker would first need to exploit a separate vulnerability to gain some capabilities in the Edge content process (such as the ability to read and write arbitrary memory locations), after which they could use this vulnerability to gain additional capabilities (namely, the ability to run arbitrary machine code).

Pirates Crack Microsoft’s UWP Protection, Five Layers of DRM Defeated

Source 1: jagdtigger https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/897584-pirates-crack-microsoft%E2%80%99s-uwp-protection-five-layers-of-drm-defeated/

Source 2: https://torrentfreak.com/pirates-crack-microsofts-uwp-protection-five-layers-of-drm-defeated-180215/

  • Video games pirates have defeated Microsoft's Universal Windows Platform system on Zoo Tycoon Ultimate Animal Collection, which was reportedly protected by five layers of DRM within the UWP package, including the Denuvo-like Arxan anti-tamper technology.

  • For the pirated game to work, it’s important that the game isn’t allowed to communicate with the Internet, and various layers of protection had to be bypassed, including:

    • MSStore, UWP, EAppX, XBLive, and Arxan(an anti-tamper system).

  • What is unclear at this stage is whether Zoo Tycoon Ultimate Animal Collection represents a typical UWP release or if some particular flaw allowed it to be hacked.

    • Affects uTorrent desktop app for Windows and uTorrent Web

  • The biggest threat is posed by malicious sites that could exploit the flaw to download malicious code into the Windows startup folder, where it will be automatically run the next time the computer boots up.

  • the flaw has been fixed in a beta release of the uTorrent Windows desktop app but has not yet been delivered to users who already have the production version of the app installed

Suggestion for motherboard house of cards; with a laser pointer, a protractor and a measuring tape on the floor you can measure very tall things just by doing trig.

No need for a ladder!

Wow, distributing malware with game release just to steal personal information for use in a court of law that is a whole new level of stupid.

So why have someone prepare a WAN document with so many topics when most of it is "boring"? Just have 3 or 4, that's all that is needed.

Also once Floatplane is in fact off the ground and operational later this year will all of the LTT content go over there? Will LTT become a pay to watch in its entirety?

Well, not everybody has time to go through all those posts, so I just look at the doc once a week...
