What do people use home servers for?

I really dont see the appeal of normal people having servers in there home, anyone who has a server in there house...why do you have it?

 

I like the concept but i cant see what to do with a home  server.

Because it's my house and I'll do as I please.

 

But really, I have it to test things out before pushing them to production servers and quick file sharing to friends and family.

Plex, games, torrenting, music streaming, and mining. I generally like to keep these on a separate computer as it won't slow down my main PC if I am transcoding movies in plex and I can shove it in a closet

Game servers let me play games with friends without bogging down my main machine or pay excessive prices.

NAS/file servers allow me to access files on multiple machines and devices easily, and allow me more storage than some single systems can do alone. Same for Plex servers.

As others have said: game server, VM hosts to host other servers, web server, mining server, plex/media server, backup server, router, content filter, etc... when virtualized, one box can do a lot of these things at once.

Home servers in your diagram in this case allow multiple devices to connect to a managed or unmanaged network that can then connect to the internet or remain internal. 

 

For instance, some people on the forum use IP phones which require a server to be set up to do so, others have devices that can also benefit from servers such as thin clients. There are also IP based cameras that are powered over Ethernet and then connected to an internal server. 

 

There's plenty of use cases. I have a home server for a security based solution involving 12 cameras, motion sensors and two keypads, as well as phones in every room. It really depends. 

 

In other cases some have storage servers to export and import files as they please.

I use an old optiplex with a core 2 duo for TeamSpeak, OpenVPN, and SSH. I could do those things on my desktop, but every time I restrated my desktop those services would also stop, which is bad considering I would rather not kick my friends off the server if I just want to do some overclocking. To my point, this particular server had over 200 days of uptime until recently.

 

I also have a second server with a q6600 that I plan to use for game servers, web servers, or really whatever else I want.

I use mine for a few things:

 

1)  NAS.  It's drives are faster than what I have in my laptop, so with my gigabit LAN (not internet, just LAN unforunately) I can basically have a medium speed storage solution that I'm attached to, while having a high capacity but low speed drive in my laptop.  With the addition of my desktop, it's also acting as a higher capacity solution in lieu of a hard drive, so that I can store my entire Steam Library without adding a bunch of storage to the desktop.  I also use it to store VM images; while I don't have a whole lot of RAM in it or a great CPU (and I have to provide internet to it via WiFi, which rules out things like ESXi, Proxmox, or Unraid), it does have storage space and I can simply have the VM images stored on it, then use the processing power in my desktop or laptop to actually run them.

 

Also, I don't like having to defrag my drives after doing things on them and that's not really a concern with EXT4, so I save myself some downtime after shuffling Steam games around or deleting a bunch of VMs or whatever might cause a ton of fragmentation.

 

2)  Gateway with autossh.  This allows me to go from an EC2 instance on AWS and SSH in to my home network remotely.  This is done without port forwarding on the Router that my ISP gave me, so I effectively have access to my home network without opening it up to the internet as much.

 

3)  Zabbix server.  Automated monitoring of my other computers and VMs, with notifications if things go wrong.  This can be pretty invaluable for troubleshooting problems that otherwise don't leave logs.

 

4)  Secondary testing environment.  Although I do some riskier stuff in VMs, I do also have my main services for my EC2 instance replicated to it and can test out configuration changes before pushing them to the EC2.

 

5)  Quick backup hub.  Since it's always on and is always at home, I can run some automated backup scripts on it.

I just store data.  movies, music, programs and backups.

I run a Plex server off of a small Mac Mini

i use it so my main PC doesnt have to be on all the time, if someone wants to stream from it it wont affect my main PC's network performance and because Mac OS is more stable and doesnt have auto updates so the server requires basically 0 maintenance

Set up a TV tuner, a PVR backend and mist server so you can create RTMP streams then access these streams by logging into your VPN.

1)  NAS.  It's drives are faster than what I have in my laptop, so with my gigabit LAN (not internet, just LAN unforunately) I can basically have a medium speed storage solution that I'm attached to, while having a high capacity but low speed drive in my laptop.  With the addition of my desktop, it's also acting as a higher capacity solution in lieu of a hard drive, so that I can store my entire Steam Library without adding a bunch of storage to the desktop.  I also use it to store VM images; while I don't have a whole lot of RAM in it or a great CPU (and I have to provide internet to it via WiFi, which rules out things like ESXi, Proxmox, or Unraid), it does have storage space and I can simply have the VM images stored on it, then use the processing power in my desktop or laptop to actually run them.

 

Also, I don't like having to defrag my drives after doing things on them and that's not really a concern with EXT4, so I save myself some downtime after shuffling Steam games around or deleting a bunch of VMs or whatever might cause a ton of fragmentation.

 

2)  Gateway with autossh.  This allows me to go from an EC2 instance on AWS and SSH in to my home network remotely.  This is done without port forwarding on the Router that my ISP gave me, so I effectively have access to my home network without opening it up to the internet as much.

 

3)  Zabbix server.  Automated monitoring of my other computers and VMs, with notifications if things go wrong.  This can be pretty invaluable for troubleshooting problems that otherwise don't leave logs.

 

4)  Secondary testing environment.  Although I do some riskier stuff in VMs, I do also have my main services for my EC2 instance replicated to it and can test out configuration changes before pushing them to the EC2.

 

5)  Quick backup hub.  Since it's always on and is always at home, I can run some automated backup scripts on it.

 

I wish I knew how to do even half of those things, I have a 2nd PC along with 2 spare 6TB NAS HDDs that I could put to use for something like that but not sure where to start... File server and OpenVPN will probably be easiest, just not sure how to make it a streaming and backup solution...

Some people just have a home server to make sharing between their devices easier. Streaming movies to your various Tv's, Playing music through dedicated speakers Etc. 

Some people have home servers to make them feel futuristic about having all computers connected in their house and at THE WHIM OF THEIR FINGER TIPS. woops went a bit evil there hehe.

 

I Personally would get a home server just to have my music and movies available upon request. Have built in speakers so your whole house has the song playing in unison 

Some people prefer a challenge, I just band my head against a wall until my method works...
