So they’ll have to use a paper map or ask for directions, such an inconvenience.

You overestimate the ability of some people to use the outdated "paper map" technology.

I have honestly never used one other than gps and I would say there are a lot of people who haven't as well making it difficult for people to adapt  I mean I could easily do it but I am sure there are those out there that aren't as capable.

And here's a bunch of Google News results

Then testing a large area that is being jammed makes a lot of sense.

Not sure why that matters as most probably cant read a map. Maps are unneeded most the time because signs are available anyway for major trips.

Hate to burst your bubble but the iPhone 8 and up can use the Galileo network instead. :P

Galileo on phones is spotty, depends largely on model and app. You can also buy dedicated handheld satellite navigation devices can support additional satelite networks other than the Navstar (GPS) network, including Galileo (EU's network), Glasnos (Russia's network), BeiDou (China's), NAVIC (India) or QZSS (Japan).  (The last three do not have global reach, only regional reach)

A lot of people mistakenly believe that the GPS network is the only one but it's not for one major shortcoming; It's entirely controlled by the United States.  That means that the United States can fuck with the system.  They can reduce it's accuracy of the system.  They can limit the system to only US Military devices.  They can shut the system down globally or by region.  They can could even have the system provide purposefully incorrect data.  So other nations have established their own satellite navigation systems that they themselves can have control over.

I just like to tin-foil and see what people will say or if they'll take the bait and write me a 3 paragraph formatted essay on what I said. ? Though realistically, it probably does have something to do with ol' Kimmy since our leadership seems to be pretty dilhole-brained and seemingly wants to start a war, or at the very least get someone blasted off the planet (aka something that could cock up GPS).

You do realize how much emergency services rely on GPS right? Before the early 2000s you were forced to learn maps or get lost. Now people rely on it to the point your phone goes into emergency mode for a set amount of time to give exact coordinates. Those coordinates are important in situations like kidnappings or if someone goes unconscious while calling 911. And I said 1 person, not many, dont put words in my mouth.

People relying on it to the point they become more stupid with their sense of direction. Can't be dependent on technology cause it will fail you.

Interesting, even the iPhone 6s has it onboard: http://www.usegalileo.eu/EN/inner.html#data=smartphone

(Autocorrect probably: GLONASS -> Glasnos)

I would expect the US military have allowed their GPS units to fall back on the alternative constellations so that in wartime even if GPS is disabled the enemy cannot take down the system of neutral countries with repercussions.

You also have to remember though that any of those systems can be JAMMED.  Any large military would have to be insane NOT to have systems to jam, disrupt, or even inject false data into satellite navigation signals to limit their enemy's operations in the battlefield.  ...Not to mention the possible usage of anti-satellite weaponry.

And this is probably why these tests are being done.  The US Military would basically have to be insane to assume 100% GPS reliability in real world combat, especially with another major power and then never train to operate under a hindered or offline GPS system.

I can also think of quite a few intersections where a navigator is immensely useful -- namely knowing which lane to be in as you take an exit that has several exits itself with horrible signage.

Not the first time they've done exercises like this, though I believe the last one involved a comms blackout instead of GPS, but I do not know if it affected civilian devices in any way.

Next test is cellular blackout then, which would kick off the apocalypse the moment the towers are knocked off.
