Parents keep telling me “Video games cause mental disorders” which I find pure bull shit

What the hell do I say? Just say okay and walk away or argue but I wouldn’t know what to say when arguing and they are annoying me. So just recommended things I should say

Everything can cause mental disorders. It's about how you steel yourself and diversify your time among various doings that makes you a "balanced" individual.

I quote balance since the psychological and sociological definition of "normal" can be vastly different depending on your locale and anything that deviates from that "normal" is classified as deviant behavior.

Also, if you play football on a soccer field, you're a deviant sociologically.

Here is fact from my experience.

1st semester:

- Could not stop playing Age of empires.

- Literally every day.

- Grades were C / C-

-  Felt bad.
- Ate quick, bad food.

2nd semester I quit. It was hard because temptation is always there - a quick download.
- Mood was better

- More productive
- Grades were B+ / A-
- felt positive
- Ate way more healthy for cheaper too.

My life is so much better without video games now. I am very happy to have quit.

Mental disorder, maybe not. But we do have physiological symptoms here which could include lethargy or depression.

But that isn't an effect that only video games happen.  Say the act of solving Sudoku puzzles took the place of Age of Empires.  What is the difference?

I would simply tell them anything that is fun to humans can cause mental issues, but only if they are weak willed, then give examples such people being obsessive over a sports team, people being addicted to gambling drinking etc.

(though my parents already understood this due to their own lives and the crazy shit they've seen)

here's a fact from my experience:

I play video games about an hour a day on average, its a time-efficient stress relief that helps me start the next day without the stress of the day before on my mind.

anything you do endlessly will mess with your mood, the key is in finding a balance. you could (probably much quicker) burn yourself out with filling out crosswords all day every day.

This.

Anything can be bad for you.
What you need to do is ask your parents to tell the truth on WHY SPECIFICALLY they think the way they do.

It improves problem solving skills, hand eye co-ordination and many other positive traits you can google for DAYS on this stuff.

Collect info about the positives and negatives and explain to your parents.

However.. they could very well stick their head in the sand, and ignore evidence, and still lock you out due to..... truthfully, not caring about learning new things like you want to.

What I find annoying, the people who's head is in the sand have no way to justify the reasons because they themselves are oblivious to any positives it can provide.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

... Fucking first world problems...

If you took the effort and time, you'd find there is scientific support for both sides of the argument. Video games breed violence and can be linked to depression, it bidder games increase problem solving skills and teamwork. It depends on which side of the fence you are on.

Maybe if you took your time and did your own research, you could have an informed discussion with parents. Remembering a sentence from someone in a forum doesn't help if these parents ask questions relating to your statement.

But since this requires to much effort, then let the parents win, because apparently bettering yourself is a complete waste of time.

Thats the attitude your parents see.

And think it'll get worse by spending your spare time on a computer.

Anything that requires effort... (Chores/School/LIFE SHIT) they think you will put off or never do, because that requires effort and you now are taken by a device that makes you even lazier.

*Empathy, think of their reasons, can you counter them?

Anything, when done in excess, will cause problems.
An hour or two a day of video games will not affect your life at all.

Long period of gaming every day could be seen as "problematic", especially if you start neglecting your other duties(studying) and social connections(friends), in which case you might be addicted.

http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-42541404

If this is a new behavior from your parents, I assume they read articles about this and suddenly "figured out" that you may had a mental disorder because the WHO says playing video games is bad. (not really but parents are often not the brightest when it comes to these kind of things, they think they know what's best for their kids)

I'd always say hey at least I'm not on drugs, drinking alcohol (well I am...I'm a grown a** man!), and knocking some poor girl up.

There is no scientific study that even proves remotely of what they're saying...
