Why is water proofing so important?

In almost every review of a phone, smart watch or wearable tech there's always either a pro or con for water resistance. I find a lot of people complaining that certain phones or tech aren't water proof but why? Personally, I don't go swimming (why do you need to swim with your phone anyway?) or drop my phone in the toilet on a regular basis so I don't really care about water proofing. I know it's a "just in case" thing but tbh even phones with out water resistance still do alright after being in some water as long as it isn't for an extended period of time. It just seems like a silly thing to base an purchase on unless you need that use case like you do water related stuff constantly like surfing or are a swim instructor.

Yeah it's marketing and people seem to want it so they will sell it. I agree though as I have never gotten my phone wet

It's never anyone's goal to get their phone wet. Most would not survive a swimming session as it's water resistance and not waterproofing. It's just good to have. One less thing to worry about. We as a society tend to not want to go backwards, so if one does it, they all must (to a point).

Well when reviewing phones that could have water resistance, mostly they will be in the flagship range. ($600>)

 

If all the other phones that compete with this certain phone are waterproof and they are the same price, then that is a reason to complain about water resistance, it is less about what the feature does, and more about the value of the phone. Is there a specific reason why they could not waterproof the phone, or is the manufacturer just trying to save money? Hopefully reviewers will use common sense to determine one or the other. In the case of the Razer phone, the large speakers limit the water proofing, while most phones have water resistance not all companies want to put IP ratings on their phones. In HTC's case, the 10 was fairly waterproof, but they did not rate it because they probably did not want customers going out of their way to get the phone wet. All these reasons have to be considered when you are reviewing a phone, so I would generalize for the informed reviewer that they are making a connection here and when they are asking for waterproofing they might just be asking for the rating, or wanting the company to try harder to make their phone be good value compared to others in that price range. 

 

In my case, I almost never notice my phone in my pocket, and have swam with my waterproof phones about 3 times accidentally (+ 2 times on purpose). It is also nice to be more aggressive with water and cleaner when wiping down your phone, so you don't have to worry about getting water in ports/buttons.

Water resistance is good for those accidental drops in the toilet or those random spilled drinks. That said, I've never damaged a phone with liquid myself, though I've frequently seen water damaged devices from family and friends. Overall, I think water resistance is a good thing in reducing accidental damage.

 

However, I stress that water resistance doesn't mean that you can take your phone scuba diving. My Dad found that out the hard way with the Xperia Z3.

 

Incidentally, I've heard of people dropping their LeEco phones (mine is a Le Pro 3) into water and having it survive with no ill effect. As there's no official rating, I'd prefer not to find out, either intentionally or of the more exciting impromptu way.

One word. Sweat. I worked in construction for 12 years and I can't tell you the amount of phones I've ruined (with cases BTW) smart and dumb with sweat. I live in the US in the state of Arizona. During the summer (sometimes through the Fall) we sit at 100+ F or 37.7 C. 

I got the S5 when it was released for Verizon and haven't switched it (till I switched to Sprint now I have a S7 still water resistant). When this one kicks the bucket I hope they have a military grade consumer smart phone with some shock resistance. I had a "Rugged" flip phone that was water  and shock resistant, that thing kicked butt!

Ah true good point, I'm in the UK so sweat isn't a big issue but I get it. I believe Samsung releases an "Active" version of their phones that have tougher shells and shock resistance, I'd give it a Google.

If anything it's raising the bar. If X feature comes out on Y phone and nobody else has it, then it's going to be seen as better. And if everyone else starts to put it on their phones but you don't at the same price point, it's going to look inferior.

 

It's the same reason why "Dynamic Contrast" exists. Some low-end monitor company wanted to find some number they can use to make their monitors look better. And since 99% of customers aren't going to research what the bloody hell those specs mean, the other monitor manufacturers had to put that bogus spec in so they wouldn't look bad.

I hope it's still around, I use my smart phone for the utility of it, not for games. Plus I have a really good case for it at the moment. So I won't be upgrading it until I see performance issues. 

 

Also if you are a parent and you don't have a teething toy for your newborn on you you can give them your phone and with the water resistance you won't have to worry about the drool haha.

It's just an extra piece of mind. That way if you do spill something on your phone, drop in in water, take it out in the rain, etc... you know it's not going to break.

 

I'd rather not have my several hundred (or at this rate, thousand) dollar phone be destroyed by a little bit of water, and I know many others feel the same way.

Not everyone lives/works in an environment that is a climate controlled, indoor space. Personally, I am medically retired, but pretty much my entire working life was spent in inclement weather, extreme hot/cold, or places where it would be easy for your phone/tablet/laptop to be exposed to drops in snow/water, light rain, whatever. The water resistance may not be a selling point for you, but is is high on the list for those who work and or play in extreme environments. Heck, even the printer I carried at work in my truck was lightly rained on a few times.

 

I dropped my flashlight in my driveway at the beginning of winter in 2014 without realizing it. I lost it in the snow. I plowed snow along that driveway all winter, not to mention pulling my truck with trailer and heavy equipment up and down that driveway all winter long.

 

Spring thaw came and I found my flashlight. Clicked the tailcap switch and the thing turned on, good as new. Cosmetically it... had character, but I still use that flashlight to this day.

If a company advertises a phone as being military grade, it's most likely nonsense. True military grade hardware is expensive. A simple fan controller for use in the military can cost $5,000 a piece. 

 

I highly doubt a consumer phone will have true military ruggedness.

Being a military combat veteran, and now somewhat involved in manufacturing of items that can be made "military grade" or not, this person is quite correct. I even have a friend who works for DARPA (the Department of Defense R&D section) and true military grade is generally very expensive. Military DESIGN is truly awful, clunky, and far from user-friendly, and is different than military GRADE. I speak in regard to electronics mostly, but it applies to clothing too.

Lifesaver when I travel, I’m constantly getting caught in the rain and occasionally take my phone swimming for the camera. Sometimes I like to take a selfie while swimming in the rain :P

There's this thing that's called "rain" and it's a lot more common than dropping a phone in the toilet or swimming. Same goes for those who listen to music in the shower. Steam and condensation and all that.

 

With phones being expensive investments these days, why wouldn't you want peace of mind for common conditions?
