New GTX 1060 with 5GB of vram

A new GTX 1060 has made its way to the web. This new GTX 1060 will have 5GB of GDDR5 vram and spec is almost the same as the 6GB version. The only difference is the memory interface, where the 5GB model is 160bit vs the 3GB and 6GB both at 192 bit. The card was made exclusive for China where there is a increase in internet cafes. My guess for this is, pricing is between the 3GB and 6GB model?

• GP106-300 = GTX 1060 3GB vram
• GP106-350 = GTX 1060 5GB vram
• GP106-400 = GTX 1060 6GB vram
• GP106-410 = GTX 1060 6GB vram at 9Gb/s

New market segment identified that would like a GPU between a 3GB and a 6GB 1060 (and quite possibly some supply contracts signed beforehand as well). It doesn't cost NVIDIA much when all they are doing is modifying an existing manufacturing process with somewhat cheaper components (that isn't even the GPU die).

 

Same reason why there are so many other xxxx-ti GPUs in existence - market segment identified, market segment catered to.

If you read the OP, you'll notice the card is not for consumers (or at least, not for your "individual" ones) - internet cafes will be buying them in bulk:

There are so many budget builders that probably blew their load at the title because now they can save $5-10. Trust me, this fills the niche of the freaks trying to pinny pinch every where they can.

So...If true I appear to be vindicated in saying no one should buy the 3GB 1060 as it has no right to exist and nvidia had no reason to make it so cut down aside from making consumers think they'll need to upgrade soon with the 3GBs of VRAM? Too bad 580 pricing shit the bed.

If it's $10 - $15 or more per unit, bulk buyers will definitely take notice. NAND isn't cheap, remember.

Eh, people bought it. That alone justifies its existence from a purely business aspect. Remember, Nvidia isn't your friend, they're a business. They exist to make money. This won't be available to the public. So the 3GB card will continue on.
