What is the GPD WIN 2?

Owning a portable handheld game console capable of running AAA games such as GTA5, has always been the dream of many gamers. But even the best handheld consoles on the market like the PSV and 3DS struggle to run these games. Better performance normally requires a device whose size, weight, power consumption and heat production prohibit small form-factors. However, what an optimal handheld design pursues is portability, compactness, small heat production and long battery-life.

Last year, we successfully launched the GPD WIN, the first 5.5-inch Windows handheld game console in the industry. The significance of this machine lies in the fact that many games that could only be played in front of a television or a computer in the past, can for the first time now run on a portable handheld. However, we understand that the first generation GPD WIN had some deficiencies, especially in the area of performance and heat dissipation.

We are committed to developing a handheld game console that can run AAA games smoothly. At the same time, the heat-dissipation, power consumption, device weight, portability, battery-life and other indicators will also be taken into account. Thus, we have gone through a product development period of a long time to introduce to you a new generation of our product: The GPD WIN 2.

I loved the Idea of the GPD Win and GPD Pocket, I am excited to see how well this updated Win does. They will launch the kickstarter on January 15 and it is expected to hit the market in April. This device will use a larger 6" 720p screen, some might think a 720p might be low but keep in mind this is a gaming first device unlike the higher resolution Pocket. I think 720p is a good compromise for PC games on this type of hardware and size.

 

The retail price is $699 and the crowdfunding price is $599.

M.2 Slots pretty cool, Build and layout seem decent i sort of remeber the 1st one of linus review not being as well rounded looking.

 

Battery life looks to double my switch battery life but worse GPU?

 

Though options of games are huge many Pc Gamers have all thoses 2-15$ good sales you couldnt pass on a year or 2 old game that you just never got around to playing and this would get it done for you.  

 

Price i havent seen anywhere? i have enough gaming devices so im personally a pass but i find it really cool.

ya the GPU is worse, I hop they next version will use a AMD apu. The M.2 slot is a nice feature giving it a big drive speed upgrade and storage size. 

 

The retail price is $699 and the crowdfunding price is $599.

 

This seems like a good product for me because I don't really need a laptop, and this can be used for games, movies, or light PC stuff.

CPU-Z chart seems strange to me, how is it going over 1000 points singlecore while my I7 4790K goes under 500 points at stock? well i guess we dont know what version its using and im running a few things right now, but still that seem extremely high for something that goes in your pocket

well I think they would of but I think because they have a long development time Raven Ridge would not be possible until next generation.

The main point is how much faster it is over the Win.

For $699 it seems a bit much. Like why not a Surface pro 4 with a core m3 which can be had for 699-799. or similar ultrabooks  ( i know thats not the same But example of similar specs/better for the money)  i Feel like this Needs to be $399 ish if they were to Do something like an Good Dedicated Graphics or AMD APU then yeah $699 would make sense not sure thermals would allow it though.

well this is for gaming, which means the higher res screens on the surface do not help, and it does not have built in controller, or fit in a pocket.

it wont help for gaming but when comparing what it should cost i mean the 720p screen has to be a much cheaper Part then the surfaces high res good quality screen. Yeah i know it doesn't fit in the pocket But it is portable to some degree. My main point is that the Cost to build a surface or similar ultrabook i imagine is more. so i think basing that with similar specs the GPD should be somewhat cheaper.

i Think i would just Pick one or the other Spending $1000 on two mobile gaming devices is a bit much IMO But i got a switch because i waste too much money on tech and dont use most of what i buy lol. Biggest problem i see with the switch is companies thinking just cause its on the switch they can charge Large $ $60 for doom and skyrim No thanks and this is where i think the GDP would be strong cheaper older games on steam.

Well to be honest the same factor, that killed the first one for me, also kills this - the price. $699 for this crappy parts is a bit too much. Also the fact that it's gonna be annoying to use it for anything else (for example: read a book - oh its too small and I have to keep it close to my eyes witch will get tired; write something - small keyboard + again small screen; watch a movie - small screen not comfortable and etc). For gaming purposes okay - you can run most of the games I guess. My favorite game that freaks out from windows scale - nightmare to play.

 

This being said I also have to take a look at the improvements witch are all nice. M.2 slot great! Longer battery life  - again great. More than 2x times better graphics (no longer need to play everything on the crappiest settings and yet get low fps) - even greater.  The fact that it runs full windows - almost priceless.

 

Honestly I really like the idea behind it and would love to try one in real life. Sadly no one in my country is even interested into importing and I won't trust shipping a computer of any kind from outside my country. Also this sits in a weird place - between a laptop and a desktop. Gaming performance sucks compared to a similar priced other machines and I'm not sure that the portability plays so big role, at least for me (I have a 7 year old laptop that is still capable of playing my games and a desktop that is cheaper than the WIN 2 yet smashes it).

 

That's my opinion: cool but not that cool to spend that much money.

They’re a bit screwed on the pricing front because the Intel CPU they use costs them $281 alone.

Buttons should be on the bottom of the device, more of less where your fingers land when holding it.  If your have to take your thumb(s) off the analog "sticks" then it's a bad design, in terms of usability while gaming.

I think that you are overestimating it's gaming performance.  It is most certainly not sitting between a laptop and a desktop.  It's just a low power Intel chip.  Most 'unremarkable' dual core Intel laptops between 13-15" would run faster than this thing.  My i7 7500u laptop is more powerful in both CPU and GPU.

This is what I am looking for... I would buy this pc, change the thermal paste for some LM, use throttlestop to reduce the v-core/cache voltage, underclock slightly (this will actually improve performance, because it will stabilize it and there will be no rapid changes, or spikes) and I would overclock the GPU as high as it would go (my hd 530 in my hp omen 15 2016 goes up to 1,35GHz and that has improved my quicksync assisted render times). I would also lock my games to 30fps and basically improve their graphics level to like medium.

 

I would also couple this laptop with a cheap 720p projector and watch some movies on the road.

First let say from a gaming point I look for being comfortable to use it. There is nothing more versatile and comfortable than a PC (it can also use controller so every console can blow it). Laptop to me even stationary is super uncomfortable and annoying to game on. Now imagine say in a car or bus or anything - impossible, for me.

Now the GPD WIN - person used to the controls, can game in this environment quite easily. This is the major factor for putting it between the stationary desktop and the laptop.

 

Second please define "run faster". General "running faster" is determined by the storage - even the fastest chip pared with the slowest HDD will run way slower than this with M.2 drive. Game performance I'm not surprised that your full size laptop will be way more powerful than it since manufactures have a lot more room for cooling, more and better parts and electricity power to be more powerful.

Erm, no... M.2 or NVME drives really have negligable effect on gaming performance.  This is why NVME is generally not recommended as an 'upgrade' to improve gaming.  One would have to have a pretty painfully slow HDD (Re: BROKEN) for a to bog down the system to the point hat a much slower GPU out performed it.

 

Secondly, I think you are confusing M.2 for NVME.  This thing does not support NVME, it supports M.2.  M.2 SATA drives still use the standard SATA protocol and achieve no speed advantage over other SATA SSDs, they're just smaller and more suitable smaller applications.

I said general use - opening your browser for example not playing GTA V!

Also I dare you to compare even the o so slow M.2 SSD vs my pride and joy - SATA 2  250 GBs 5400 rpm with bad sectors laptop HDD (50 MB/s read at best) that made almost throw away my laptop.

...Yes... GTA5...  I literally run GTA5 at 4K @60hz off a 250GB HDD in my HTPC...

 

You can go read it up.  Storage media does not have a huge influence on gaming performance.  Depending on titles there are some advantages between HDD and SSD, but not to the level that you are attempting to describe.

Cool but I think it would be more practical to port it to IOS and Android. As GTA San Andreas, Minecraft, and and many other desktop titles run incredibly well on IOS. Probably due to the optimizing when forced to use Metal or something

Pretty sure the switch has a much better gpu. I honestly couldn't imagine playing games on an Intel intergrated gpu.
