Ok, so in English we are doing a debate on the flat earth theory, I just want to know, any believers on here? If so why? I'm trying to keep an open mind at the moment, so any pointers welcome.

You can even see the horizon curving when you're flying in an airplane typically 39,000 feet up. Not flat.

If you want arguments and evidence in favor of the flat earth hypothesis, then just go to the Flat Earth Society.

They're pretty much the go to guys for that information.

You could ask the same about religion.

Christianity, for example, has convinced people that there is an invisible man in the sky watching every move you do. He is almighty! Except when it comes to money. His only problem is that he cannot handle money. That is why he needs your money. xD

It sounds an awful lot like one of those flat earth arguments. The only difference is that millions of people follow religions. These people should be treated like flat earth people. There exists zero evidence for both religion and flat earth... Just something to get one thinking.

If the Earth was round, why are our shoes flat and not curved??

Don't underestimate us; the flat Earth society has members all around the globe.

honestly i would love to believe it. it would bring back some mistery to the world and makei it a more magical place. sadly the first thing i do when i come across a new conspiracy theory is look at the people that already believe it. so if you look at the nuts shouting that the is flat it looses a lot of credibility. same goes for religion and politics.

what really throws me off though is when they "actually find evidence" like those giant skeleton prooving giants existet. or that black knight "satelite" prooving aliens exist. or ancient stone walls in peru that contain stones cut so prefectly that we wouldnt be able to do it even with modern tools. you know stuff like that.

so i definitly think the history of the earth is more "magical" than the current science will have us believe but that doesnt mean i subscribe to every theory out there.

im one of those obnoxious people that dont choose a side. for example there are questions out there that we dont have any definite proof for but im not gonna accept a religion to be true just because i have no better answer. im fine with not knowing yet. i dont have to accept the best answer we could come up with in spite of having no proof for it.

Well, science doesn't want you to believe anything. Proper science just gives you explanations for phenomenas around us. If there isn't any explanation yet then science doesn't tell you to believe in *insert funny stuff here*. If new information comes up theories get adjusted accordingly.

Despite that – having beliefes isn't a bad thing. It can give you hope, it can give you strength, it can give you peace. But don't mix beliefes with institutionalised religions that try to tell you believing in their story is the only truth and path to salvation. Institutionalised religions are what's turning something good into a tool of oppression, of exploitation, of greed, of power.

well the thing though is that those "explanations" are always bound to those technological advances. science will have you believe in lets say time travel isnt poosible but then however many years we discover a whole new dimension or perspective if you will and look at the whole of existenz differently all of a sudden things that seemed ilogicol are possible and clear as day. that would mean we were wrong to believe in the original theory to begin with. people try to explain the universe to themselves as best they can with what senses and technology they have but if we grow athird eye in the future then suddenly 2+2 may not be 4. obviously as we belive time to be infinite this means also theres never gonna be a definitive answr to anything but thats a whole other issue. i just dont like people telling me "this is thee truth and only this". no matter if religion, onspiracy or science for that matter. the only truth is that we dont know.

That sounds ridiculous. You are saying that an English teacher in a 1st world country wants his/her students to discuss whether or not the earth is flat? That "debate" really doesnt have to be had, as there is no, none, zero, nada evidence that would support this absolutely ludicrous "Flat Earth Theory".

define "giants", climate change is not really a conspiracy theory unless you want it to be because you're into coal and oil and time travel is very much possible. According to Einstein's theory of relativity the faster you go the slower your time passes as perceived by an outside observer. That's basically the twin paradoxon. This effect has already been proven (on a smaller scale) with atomic clocks on planes and sattelites.

i meant the non existence of it is a conspiracy theory and im disappointed that i have to point that out

ok sure but nobody went back and killed hitler yet. thats what i mean with that theory. theres stories of secret nazi experiments where at the end of the war the head scientist and the supposed time travel machine just vanished and stuff like that.

also the list just goes on and on and on...

Well, for once, I wouldn't call time dillution the same as time travel and second, the same theory mentions that in order to truly go back in time you'd have to break the speed of light which, again, isn't possible as of 2017 according to generally agreed upon theoretical physics.

i like you. this is what i mean. you couldve just stopped at " which, again, isn't possible" butthat part at the end there is something id like more people to acknowlegde

I don't see anything wrong with having a debate about it.

Remember, it's English class, not science class. The purpose of an English class is to learn things such as debate techniques. The assignment isn't about whether or not Earth is flat or round, it's about demonstrating your ability to debate something.

Never said it was possible to go back. Traveling forward though is very much possible and is happening every day and it is measurable. Even GPS satelites need to account for this. Gravitational effects do have an influence on time as well. That's why time "slows" near gravitational anomalies like black holes. And since time is just one of the at least 4 dimensions of our universe "wormholes" or Einstein-Rosenberg bridges are could not only cross spatial dimensions but also time (-> spacetime). If you were able to control and manipulate mass to an extent that allowed you to create artificial singularities you could (in theory) create those bridges and travel back in time.

You have to differentiate between technological capabilities and physical possibilities.
