iPad Pro 2018 rumored to be a giant iPhone X

Rumors have started to pop up regarding Apple's upcoming iPad pros. Design-wise, they are expected to ditch the home button, which means touch ID would be replaced with face ID. On the flipside, slimmer bezels are to be expected, though no one seems to know whether the notch will be there as well. From Bloomberg:

The display will probably be not be OLED, again, according to Bloomberg.

Terrible wording aside, it would make sense for Apple not to use OLED on iPads, for the same reason that's keeping manufacturers from selling OLED monitors: high failure rates, especially with bigger displays, which increases the cost significantly. The fact that Samsung makes their displays probably doesn't help with keeping the costs low.

 

Apple has been upgrading the iPad pros based on what's been done with the iPhone. Usually, the updated processor would get higher clocks or a higher core count as well as an X. Next year's A11X could very well have 8 cores, according to MacRumors. This would indeed result in unprecedented levels of performance on such a thin and light device.

Both are very vague when it comes to sources. Bloomberg's article quotes "people familiar with the matter [iPad design]". MacRumors got its information on the A11X's core count from "Chinese website MyDrivers", which in turn claims to get its news from people "within Apple's supply chain".

 

 

I think Apple is trying very hard to have people buy their iPads as laptop replacements. In my opinion, what they're doing doesn't make much sense in that regard, since performance and aesthetics are not what's keeping buyers from picking an iPad and a keyboard case over a regular 2-in-1 device. The typing experience is. And those 8 cores and slim bezels aren't going to solve the problem. Also, I can't think of any kind of professional who whould take advantage of that GPU and CPU power for tasks such as video editing or 3D rendering with such a limited ecosystem. I'd say the regular iPad is slowly dying, and Apple's strategy is to create a niche for the iPad pro so that they can keep selling them, maybe to prosumers or businesses. Still, an overpowered tablet looks like a tough sell with so many thin and powerful foldables and detachables out there.

They are becoming ridiculously fast for the form factor with great battery life. 

 

Though IOS is useless in terms of productively using it. if only they Developed ios faster for the ipads speed and or just ported Mac OS

 

Also no sure about that small of bezels tablets need to be held with a better grip then a phone and without a case could be awkward 

 

Sad part is as someone who only owns android stuff i sort of want a Ipad Pro for the pencil to replace my pen and papper note taking at work  so its all save and organized in one place.  but $600 for a notebook is dumb and so i havent pulled the trigger ( i know it does a million more things but this is a reason i find that stands out that makes me want it )

As for ipads replacing laptops, right now the macbook doesn't really offer anything over the ipad pro. This is a problem with the macbook in my opinion, but it's clear that there is a market for expensive, superlight, semi-useless machines that only exist for facebook and netflix - and the ipad pro does that just fine (while being cheaper...).

Is it? You can run Office on it just fine and even many simplified adobe products that are more than enough for occasional use. Let's not pretend the macbook is in any way adequate for heavy workloads.

As much as I hate iPhones I didnt mind the notch in the X because it made use of space not being used for anything. In most cases its fine except things like video or games which for most is very minimal. 

 

However, I dont think the ipad should have it because of how much its rotated between portrait and landscape. It would get quite annoying. Still think the price for these glorified browsing machines is still idiotic.

so true. Each new macbook feels more and more like Apple wants it to be a companion device to the iPhone/iPad. And each new OS upgrade i'm getting less enticed to get cause most of the new stuff they bring is focused around having a iDevice. The only thing left to the Mac over the mobiles is Xcode at this point

I'm neither a business nor a "prosumer", but my iPad Pro has successfully replaced my laptop. The typing experience is actually pretty good.

I think Apple should have removed the front camera and put a fingerprint scanner at the back, in order to eliminate the need for the notch, thus creating the first actual 100% touchscreen phone. And saved their "courage" speech for that instead of their headphone jack dick move.

Yeah this is not a good idea: With such a large screen people will naturally try to not cover it up so there's no good way to hold it so there's gonna bit a shit ton of these with broken screens cause people will drop them instead of putting their fingers right on the screen to hold it.

It's totally worth it...well, $600 is a bit much for me personally, but I paid $500 for my SP3 (2 years ago) to do just that and it's actually amazing -- if I could find a 12.9" iPad Pro and a pencil for $400~ I would 100% sell my SP3 for about $400 and switch. I recently tried using the 9.7" iPad Pro, and for the most part, it was a far better experience (other than the smaller screen). It's just so convenient to have all my notes/scratch from the last two years with me at all times and on any device (synced through One Note -- One Note is still a shitshow though).

No thank you. Rear fingerprint scanners suck. Plus you still need some space on the front for the speaker and you do still need a front facing camera for video chats, selfies, and such. The notch also isn't an issue for most people who have actually used the X -- you don't notice it after the first 30 seconds.

Well, we still needed the headphone jack. Many people used it. Making polarizing decisions such as the exclusive use of USB C on a laptop is part of Apple's role. Getting rid of this lower-end, space-consuming camera, wouldn't have been dumber than some of the choices they've made in the past.

No thank you. Rear fingerprint scanners suck. Plus you still need some space on the front for the speaker and you do still need a front facing camera for video chats, selfies, and such. The notch also isn't an issue for most people who have actually used the X -- you don't notice it after the first 30 seconds.

 

Thanks for the insight i havent actually used either that much but i Just feel like the Ipad is so light thin and great battery that i could trust it as notebook just havent pulled the trigger yet. Other half of me just doesnt want to spend the money for something at work just because lol. but yeah price wise i was just shooting off a number not exactly sure what they go on sale for or sell for right now. but with new ones comming and my purpose might be fullfilled by this gen anyhow maybe price might drop more 

 

 

Personally i like rear finger print if its in the middle. BUT  I love dual speakers and you cant get rid of the selfie cam at best it could do like the essential phone otherwise people would loose there mind it  just wouldnt work. i would of just liked the finger on the back along with face ID though.  anyone who finds the notch a problem most don't im sure a few Gens it will dissapear more

Yes, it would have been immensely more stupid. The headphone jack is easily replaced by the an adapter that they give you and that you can just leave on your headphones. Not to mention bluetooth is a thing. A camera, on the ither hand, isn't so easily replaced.

The front-facing camera is significantly worse than the others and takes up lots of space. I still think people would have got used to it, and the 100% screen selling feature would have outweighed the inconvenience. I'm also willing to bet it will get ditched eventually. But I guess we have very different uses for our smartphones, I can respect that.

The front and rear cameras serve different purposes....you can't video chat and see the person you're talking to with the rear camera. They're not meant to be competitive in terms of quality.

After Apple added files the productivity aspect is much higher. Same with split screen and stuff

I never said it was useless. I'm just saying I personally don't find it useful enough to justify Apple not releasing the first 100% screen phone. Then again, if you use video chat, you don't want the feature to vanish, it makes sense. But in that regard, it's very similar to the headphone jack situation. I charge my phone and listen to music at the same time every night, and I don't want to need the huge dongle because it's easy to lose and adds a point of failure.

Because it's annoying on a phone and I can only imagine even more annoying on a tablet where your finger is almost never near the unlock button.
