Google Fiber now offers gigabit for $55 per month to one City

Google Fiber in San Antonio, Texas comes in just one speed tier, offering 1Gbps download and upload speeds at the rate of $55 a month. Google Fiber charges $70 a month for standalone gigabit service in all other cities where it offers wired Internet service

I live in San Antonio and was notified by Google that Signs ups were starting. This is great in my opinion because, I currently have AT&T Fiber and pay $80 but am under a yearly contract.

Pay TV and Cable is a dying industry and online streaming is where everyone is heading. So Google realizing this and just offering only Internet with no contract, hidden fee and only $55 a month is amazing and they can easily take all of Spectrum and AT&T customers from my area. All of my friends and family have already signed up and will be canceling their current ISP which all pay almost $100/month for 300mbps or gigabit if they have fiber.

 

A quote from google said if you sign up for their online streaming service YouTube TV you will get a free Nvidia Sheild TV from Google which a great deal in my opinion.

I believe with this pricing begin so competitive and Google now using the micro-trenching method of speeding up fiber installation to neighborhood, they will force all other greedy ISP's to upgrade their infrastructure and offer better prices.

Google has said they currently have no plans to change the prices of fiber in existing cities and will Keep San Antonio as the only city with that $55 price.

Yup, I used to be ecstatic about google doing all the isp stuff but now I kind of hope our establishment isps in Canada can keep them away

That's pretty cheap for transit. You don't know how oversold those circuits are for residential ISPs, if you had to pay a fraction of the price for just your bandwidth you'd cry.

From my understanding ISP get massive tax breaks which are supposed to be used to upgrade infrastructure which they don't unless forced to.

The only reason AT&T offers Fiber now is because Google started to build here.

It is, but unfortunately it's almost legally impossible to compete in the ISP market. Google is getting lucky in some cities for now until they go wireless. US ISPs are messed up and not only is Google going about it the wrong way, they are giving out such a dangerous weapon to a population where most people don't even change their default login credentials.

Google can be greedy at times, but they are the only giant willing to lead the way with a venture this grand and huge. FIBE internet for the entire united states, now you won't find any other company even mentioning that.

What?!  I've no idea what you're talking about.  In what world are Bell/Telus and Rogers/Shaws better ISPs than google could be?

 

(psst; google just come to windsor -> London -> Kitchener/Waterloo and Toronto.  Forget Ottawa Damascus and dirty politicians want MaBell and Reaper Rogers)

Giving people a 1Gbps uplink to the internet without the common knowledge to protect their networks is a bad thing. The majority of DDoS attacks I and clients receive are from residential IPs which is why my biggest attack so far has only been about 60Gbps. If those same people are upgraded to 1Gbps connection then the internet we know it is done for until Google Fiber connections get blacklisted.

Perhaps, but at the amount they'd need to invest compared to the potential income, it just doesn't make sense to expand into Canada. Take San Antonio for example. 1.4 million people would put it as the third largest city in Canada.
