A company by the name of CoinHive has been selling a service to website owners and hacking their way into others to be able to run mining software through a website, depleting your system resources on your phone or tablet for money, even when you just have the tab open. It is usually used to prevent a website from having to run ads. The only problem is that this mining is done without any permission or consent from the user.

Ad blocker AdGuard recently reported that 220 sites on the Alexa top 100,000 list serve crypto mining scripts to more than 500 million people. In three weeks, AdGuard estimated, the sites generated a collective $43,000.

This is not cool on the part of the site owners. IMO at least tell your visitors. Its similar to if someone made YouTube videos from your computer without your consent, and gave a small cut to YouTube.

Just keeping this here as a Another problem posed if for users on mobile devices. Running the cpu for anything other than burst loads devours battery power, god forbid of someone figures out how to have a tab keep a phone's cpu awake for constant mining and pocket heat.

Well, I included laptops too, though websites and seemingly benign software doing random stuff to kill battery in laptops is nothing new tbh. My favorite was when Youtube started serving VP9 and left me wondering what the heck my cpu was doing at 50% utilization.

 

And then we have Windows, oh god yes. We have Windows doing literally whatever it wants, pegging the cpu at full clocks whenever the Update, trustedinstaller, or that antimalware thing gets antsy, and gives no shits as to whether you're plugged in, or in the middle of Timbuktu with the battery on it's last vestiges of chemically induced life.

It seems to not scale past 10 threads in opera. I can get a peak of 85 H/s

 

If the webpage is up front I think this is fine. the demo on the site must be user started and starts at 2 threads. (user adjustable)

 

It also provides a Capta replacement it goes by Proof of Work.

 

EDIT: the miner seems very adjustable, to the point you can set it to only use 10% of 1 thread.

I used to live in an apartment where power was included in rent (aka if I used tons it didn't affect me). I meant to setup mining on my desktop when I wasn't using it, but never did because I could never be bothered how to figure out how to set it up. If there was a website specifically for mining, so that you sign into an account on said website and it mines in your browser and credits you 95% of the revenue while taking 5% or something for itself, then I totally would have used that. Of course it's probably not going to turn you a profit if you have to pay for your power, but for people who don't have to pay for their power it could be a great tool.

Just use NiceHash. All you need is a Bitcoin Wallet from somewhere like coinbase. It will set everything else up for you. I run it while im at school or work.

Malwarebytes active protection seemed to prevent coinhive from running, when Pirate Bay was in the news for starting to use it. But I can't confirm it 100%, going to check it out again though.

In case you didn't realize it, even if power bills are included in your rent, someone still has to actually pay for what's used.  So if you start using tons of power, it's a safe bet that either your landlord will put a stop to it (by telling you to stop and/or evicting you) or they'll be jacking up your rent to compensate.  One way or another, it will affect you.
