GOOGLE EVENT MEGA THREAD

My attempts to be lazy and get someone else to make this thread were futile.

Expected announcements include

-Pixel 2

-Pixel Book

-Home Mini and/or other new Home devices

-New Daydream devices

-Half Life 3 confirmation

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/10/liveblog-google-pixel-2-and-more-launch-event/

I wasn't a huge fan of the original pixel as it replaced my beloved nexus line with what is in my opinion an attempt to appeal to iPhone fans.

I personally would like to see the new Pixel design deviate a little, at least towards a limited bezel or something. A new SOC would be cool but I feel like we would have heard of it by now.

Google Home Mini

-Nest and chromecast compatibility allow voice activated live video from nest cams inside and outside the house. $49 October 19th.

Actually, I'm hoping we'll soon see some traction with UFS cards instead. Not that Google is gonna go there but would shake things up even if it'll suck regarding pricing in the beginning.

No Headphone jack? HYPOCRITES

When Apple removed it, they used the headphone jack as a selling point for the Pixel and now they are going to remove it? Let Apple take all the flak and remove it next year, I guess. xD

Removing the headphone jack makes no sense -_-

The rumor was, unfortunately, confirmed.

it is a rumor so we will see soon. I want t headphone jack, i listen to music or twitch at work and have my phone plugged in to a charger to always have it topped off. I don't want to have to get a bluetooth headphones, and using a USB C spliter headphone thing is stupid IMO.

The bezels better not be as massive as they claim them to be from recent leaks x-x

Pretty interested to see what the Pixel XL turns out to be, but no dual cameras means no buy for me.

Full specs have leaked in GSMArena. Apparently there might be a chip just for assisting the camera. New chart topper?

I don't see how a splitter is that much of a hassle considering you already have a cable plugged in...

its not that bad for my work setup, but is their USB C to 3.5mm and USB C adapter already?

and for when I am home I will have to remember and not lose a adapter to use my headphones on my phone which is not ideal.

Things I hope to see for the next Pixels

  • Less bezels
  • Microsd slot
  • Dual sim
  • Headphone jack
  • Battery capacity to justify device thickness
  • No glass on the back, like seriously

Apart from that, couldn't care less about 'pure Android' and all other shenanigans.

I judge by hardware and make my my purchasing decision on that. I have XDA for the software (rom and stuff)

But I have no faith in device makers these days to produce what I want.

You might get one of those things, if you go with the XL. Otherwise you're SOL.

Bezels are supposed to be reduced on the XL.

SDcard slot would take up a ton of board space, and if they're dropping the headphone jack to save space it's doubtful they'd add an even bigger card slot.

Dual SIM might be a possibility, but with their focus on US markets it's doubtful.

Headphone jack is supposed to be ditched on the normal sized one to make room for the front facing speakers. Rumors are mixed whether the XL is keeping it.

Google's more interested in software improvements than cramming in a massive battery. Also keep in mind, massive batteries like the Note line has add safety concerns to the phone.

There'll almost definitely be a glass back. It's supposed to be smaller according to leaks, but it's there to help with NFC range, improve reception, and as an image thing.

This is what I am worried about. I will be very very very angry if they bring back front speakers but then remove the jack.

No, it can't. Sony's Memory Duo shit was an embarrassing shit show. Samsung wants this to be the standard to replace SD cards so they'll have to try to push the price down to the point where people want to jump onboard while recouping their R&D expenses.

If what you say is true, it won't be of any interest to me.

Saving space... for what? Less essential features?

You don't need to release a whole new phone if the only improvements are in software.

Your 'safety concerns' with massive batteries is a niche problem with the Galaxy Note 7. There are many phones out there with wayy higher battery capacity that work without issue.

Glass back for improved signaling is unproven horse shit. In reality all it does is make the device more fragile and collect fingerprints. Only good reason to have it is if there is a screen on the back or to make the shell entirely translucent.

Have a look at the Zenfone 3 Zoom and imagine it with an SD821/830/835 before telling me that Google is making any progress in hardware design.

Battery safety concern is BS as it's been proven time and time again by Huawei that you can easily cram 4000 mAh batteries into anything but 5 inchers.

Signal I believe has been proven. Antenna lines apparently aren't as good as glass or plastic. Not necessarily a massive difference though.

Glass also allows wireless charging (plastic too) which can't be done with metal.

Space is at a premium especially when you start eliminating the bezels as current battery tech is limiting how you can make them to fit in a cramped design. I'm not buying the loss of expandable storage and headphone jack. It might reduce battery capacity a little bit if you don't add thickness which is apparently the antichrist among smartphone designers.
