Samsung's 10-Year Plan Starts With 128TB QLC SSD, 960 Successor

Samsung disclosed more details than ever before about V-NAND. The company has formulated the path to 8th generation V-NAND and has ideas on how to take the technology to 10 generations. A number of new manufacturing techniques must be applied, but a detailed discussion of those is beyond the scope of this particular article.

For now, let's talk about the goods we'll see over the next year. The biggest news to come out of the new Samsung campus is QLC flash. Samsung's customers set performance and endurance specifications and don't care about the underlying technology as long as those needs are met. Samsung says it can achieve its targets with its first generation QLC (4-bits per cell) V-NAND technology

Awesome. Was wondering when new successor will be shown and even QLC so this will be very interesting. 

SSD advancements is exciting. 

 

I wanted to get 960 pro but no 256GB sadly. I have 256GB 850 Pro which is great. Don't need larger for boot drive and paying more too. Pro one is also extra premium too. So I'm interested in that lineup and looking forward for better price.

The type of power loss protection they're using in the mx300 is the same as this, as evidenced by this quote

By "this" I was referring to the micron m600.

 

You were kinda wary about getting 960s due to no power loss protection. I was pointing out there aren't really any m.2 SSDs with full power loss protection (actually now that I think of it there aren't any non-enterprise SSDs with full power loss protection afaik). Samsung doesn't really do this.

Crucial with the MX300 do, sort of.

It has caps which are able to power the SSD for long enough to flush the cache to the NAND storage.

 

It reduces the risk of data loss during a power outage but doesn't avoid it completely. If you want to be on the safe side you will need an UPS do the complete PC can shutdown properly.

Doesn't actually flush the cache, it does something a bit different

All of the advanced features carry over from previous Crucial SSDs. The MX300 doesn't offer anything new aside from its flash. It's also the first Crucial SSD with this Marvell controller. Even still, we're glad to see power-loss protection carry over, since it ensures data in the lower pages during a power loss. This form of power loss protection is geared to preserve data at rest and very few consumer SSDs offer this level of protection.

It's nowhere near full power loss protection. Yes it's better than nothing but not by THAT much.

Every time something like this comes up I start thinking I'll have to change cpu and motherboard for features much earlier than I'll need more CPU performance...

pretty sure anyone upgrading from anything faster than a i7 ivy or an i5 haswell is only doing it for features / whatever

Well, Flash is well on its way to murder HDDs in everything from notebooks to desktops to data centres at this rate. 

They even managed to exceed the expected HDD capacity (100TB) for 2025 in 2017!

Price is still a huge gap tho.

120GB SSD = 1TB hdd price wise.

SSD prices also went up during the last few months instead of down. HDD's will still be a thing for imo quite a while.
