Upgrade 3770k to 7700k worth it?

Hello, how are you?

I currently have a 3770k.

It runs 24/7 at 4.6 on a z68 board with Pcie 3.0.

For ram I have a 2x8gb gskill memory running at 2400 CL10.

I mainly use the pc for gaming.

My current GPU is a 980ti running at 1500mhz and my display is a 1080p 144hz g-sync monitor.

I was wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade to a 7700k.

I would have to get the cpu, board and a 16gb ddr4 kit.

If I then manage to sell of my board, cpu and ram for a good price, I would probably be looking at a 250 euro upgrade.

Would it be worth it?

Thank you.

Cheers

no not really,

in this situation stick with it and see what coffee lake looks like in a few months. not really worth it, the performance bumps weren't that big the last few years. i still consider my haswel xeon 1231v3 as very capable, and even that jump wasn't that big from the previous gen 3770k stuff. as you overclocked your chip very good, I don't see a point in upgrading

I used to have a 3770k and upgraded to a 6700k because I sold the entire PC first and then built my new one.

Honestly there's no difference between them in real-world usage for me.

I wouldn't expect more than 15% performance increase – compared to the costs it's not worth it imho. And keep in mind: LGA1151 is most likely about to be replaced with 8th generation of Intel's core CPUs. You'd basically end up at the same point you're now: maxed out platform. Performance wise (unless you experience serious issues) upgrading isn't sensible, economically speaking it isn't sensible at all to invest in a walking dead platform.

If you experience performance issues try to assess the bottlenecks. If it actually is the cpu do some research if more cores/threads would benefit you (Ryzen 7).

Not worth it. Ryzen 5 1600 or Ryzen 7 1700 makes more sense IF you need the extra cores. Otherwise, hold up with the upgrade.

Performance-wise? You could see some improvements. Whether it's worth it? Definitely not.

Especially that the platform is dead now and 7700K has no upgrade path whatsoever.

I am in the same boat, I have the 3550 and ready to upgrade very soon.  I don't think the 7700k is worth going to right now, while it is still a good performer, there are two possibilities if you can wait.  1. something from AMD or intel will come along that will perform better (and slightly longer due to being at the start of the life cycle) or 2. something better will come along making the 7700K cheaper.

I had a i7 3770 (non k) and it was bottlenecking my gtx 1070 like crazy. I upgraded to the 7700k with no regrets. But since you've overclocked yours I'd wait until you'll either see bottlenecking or just not getting the performance you want.

Wait for the 8700k or 10nm because it isn't going to change anything.

Nope. Not worth it unless you need cores. People still run Sandy Bridge for gaming rigs.

Just went from a 3770k to a 7700k. I will be returning my 7700k and wait for the new intel cpus. or Ryzen

Thank you all for your opinions.

It seems that from a performance point it is not worth it.

I don't find insuficient performance.

I can run all games at ultra above 100 fps.

Most of them at 144 locked with small tweaks to a at more demanding AAA titles.

I was also looking at the option to upgrade while the 3770k is still relevant and worth something.

It's always better to upgrade while the old hardware still has a market demand.

With the z68 being an already old chipset and ddr3 already replaced by ddr4 almost 3 years ago, I fear that if I wait for coffee might current setup might depreciate to a point I would only sell it for peanuts.

Cheers
