7740X's overclockabilty reviewed

Eh I'm a server person so my interests are different. It would be nice if basically the two consumer chipset lines from Intel died off and became one and the only way that can happen is if HEDT and Xeon diverged from each other more and X299 is a step in that direction. Me, I don't care if that happens but if it doesn't and now Xeons can't be used on HEDT that sucks and removes options from people looking at true workstation builds or cheap single socket server builds.

Pretty impressive. This chip still has its place despite those who say it makes no sense. I like the idea of combining mainstream & enthusiast on one platform. It allows those who want to jump onboard with plans to get a higher core count down the line. Z270ish boards limit you to 4 cores but these will allow you to pop in a good gaming chip and flexibility to go all the way to 18 cores instead of being "stuck" on mainstream.

Yep, you and I are on opposite ends of Intel's Extreme line.

Why would you want x299 if most of the features that make it appealing will be disabled? Enthusiasts overclockers who only buy a cpu to overclock it are a very small niche. If the chip is being produced they clearly hope for a larger market than that.

As things stand now though I can't see 7740X being much good. Looking at the performance graphs there is no difference between it and the 7700K, kinda duh. If you actually gained something buy using the X299 chipset and 7740X I wouldn't be questioning it at all.

 

An 8700K makes more sense than 7740X does at this point.

The i7 7740x does not feature an iGPU right? Couldn't they have fit an extra core in the place of it and make it 5c/10t (odd number I know but still) only to give users a little bit more reason to get it over the conventional 7700k?

 

I won't lie the processor is utmost desirable but I can not justify one when the locked 7700 has served me impeccably as for yet, I suppose I'm really going to to hold my ponies for those mainstream Canon Lake i7, being an early adopter of 10nm seems exciting as much as at least.

I wish it were... my only upset about my purchase habit of locked mainstream i7's is paying for an iGPU I never use

Would have been nice though. Or giving it quad channel memory and twice the maximum ram support and a few more CPU PCIe lanes for NVMe, it's supposed to be enthusiast right? Point me to the enthusiast bits about the 7740X, I can't see them.

That's not a valid argument if you can't point out WHY it should apply to anyone. The post you quoted is also flawed - entering the platform with a 340$ chip only to upgrade months or years later to an 18 core which fits a COMPLETELY different use scenario makes no sense. If you want gaming performance, z270 has all you need and going up in core count will only cripple your performance. If you need the pcie lanes and the other advanced features you'll effectively have a useless placeholder brick until you upgrade, and by the time you DO upgrade what you upgrade to will be outdated, meaning you could have just waited and gotten a better deal on better parts.

 

Even assuming you bought a consumer motherboard and then deciced you absolutely must upgrade within a year to a 1700$ intel 16 core or something like that, are the 150$ you spent on the desktop motherboard really going to make an impact given the total expense?

You can't just add one core wherever you like, but yeah, 6 core chips should have been on the desktop 2 years ago.
