7740X's overclockabilty reviewed

That's not a valid argument if you can't point out WHY it should apply to anyone. The post you quoted is also flawed - entering the platform with a 250$ chip only to upgrade months or years later to an 18 core which fits a COMPLETELY different use scenario makes no sense. If you want gaming performance, x270 has all you need and going up in core count will only cripple your performance. If you need the pcie lanes and the other advanced features you'll effectively have a useless placeholder brick until you upgrade, and by the time you DO upgrade what you upgrade to will be outdated, meaning you could have just waited and gotten a better deal on better parts.

Even assuming you bought a consumer motherboard and then deciced you absolutely must upgrade within a year to a 1700$ intel 16 core or something like that, are the 150$ you spent on the desktop motherboard really going to make an impact given the total expense?

It was valid enough for others, just not you, which only makes it more valid.  Too funny.

You can't just add one core wherever you like, but yeah, 6 core chips should have been on the desktop 2 years ago.

Yes reason why I'll only upgrade when those sweet mainstream Canon Lake i7 6c/12t comes out, I have no use for the HEDT extras since my pci-e lanes are limited to the GPU and WiFI card and I'm still old school SATA3 kind of person.

  1. Overclocking potential

And that's pretty much all that I can come up with :D

How can that not be done by improving the manufacturing process of the 7700K though?

That's a completely meaningless answer that shows you have no idea of how to further support your position. Some people think flat Earth theories are valid too, that doesn't make them correct.

While some people spend their lives trying to over complicate things.  Some things do not require debate.  They are just true.

I think that the extra Vcore pins on the 7740X may also help ;)

Yep, all the time in the world.  :D

Switching gears, we've got in-hand reviews in just under 24 hours.  Anyone else a little interested in seeing what x299 is going to be about?

so... 7740x is just a 7700k with better clocks which is just a 6700k with better clocks... not impressive at all.

at least the 7900x showed some great potential, I was not expecting that. but the 7740x seens to be what everyone tought: a chip with no reason to exist.

Ultra is stupid. ALWAYS.

Should we prepare to laugh a little when the first reviews come in lower than Kaby Lake for gaming IPC because of new cache structure and BIOS issues? :)

The 7740X doesn't have the new cache :P

The new cache structure is not applicable to Kaby Lake X.

Good point.  I forgot it's not a Skylake-X chip.

which makes things worse than before, so next year we weill have 2 kabylake gens with  different ipcs but the same name, great

@done12many2@Sauron@leadeater@MageTank

Potential use cases for the 7740X:

Validation/diagnostics. With Xeon and X299 apparently not being compatible, there needs to be an option to system builders (and enthusiasts that build many systems).

Benchmarking on a unified platform. This is something YouTubers like JayzTwoCents would appreciate, as now they don't have to have a test bench for X99/299 AND Z170/270, and they swap CPUs on them fairly regularly.

Realistic entry level bid for those that can't afford the supposed $380 or so 7800X?

Toy for Done12many2?

Potential, REALISTIC, use cases for the 7640X.

Validation/Diagnostics.

Idiocy tester.

Same IPC, damn near the same chip. 100MHz improvement if OP's article used a completely average 7740X.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.
