Reports that Nintendo Switches are bending/warping, possibly due to heat?

That's still something I don't really want to worry about when I am buying a new console. As much as its not a big deal, its still something I shouldn't have to deal with. Accidents happen and as much as you're probably really careful, I don't want to worry about it if I'm playing with friends or having a few drinks and accidentally put the controllers in wrong. 

 

Snark aside, It's great that you aren't having problems but they still happen and it's okay for me to be worried about those issues even if its a small chance of it happening. Not every S7 Note is gonna explode but are you gonna be mad if somebody didn't want to buy one unless the battery thing is addressed? Like, I said I like the console, it's not like I'm saying the thing is garbage.

I never heard anything related to stuck controllers on the Switch system. Are they pressing the button to release it? Probably not, or not fully.

Look, I'm not implying that they all have an issue and never did mean to. All I'm saying is there were problems with some units and personally I am glad I waited because I wouldn't want the risk of dealing with that. It's good that the crashes are getting patched

Yeah the bumper buttons broke a lot of you dropped it.

I am not sure I understand what saying exactly, but if I do: Yes, as you can see. The Switch isn't a PS4 or even XBox One in terms of graphics horse power it can push, but somehow more than the WiiU with a nice margin (as seen with Zelda performance increase, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Fast RMX).

But what happens, is that devs designs the game surrounding the hardware specs. Meaning that it is about how to push visuals, and performance of the game while being limited by the hardware constraints.

Agreed. Other consoles didn't do this because they all had a good enough metal chassis on the inside. The Switch has one but it isn't very thick and could have faults like this on the weaker area where the fan and such is.

I'm talking more broad. The Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 lasted over 9 years before being replaced. Now their replacement like the PS4 and Xbone are already having substitutes or replacements with the new higher end versions. It isn't a 100% replacement but there is obviously a need for more performance that consumers are willing to buy. I don't know if its because PC building has become easier or more wide spread but consoles aren't lasting as long.

Look, I'm not implying that they all have an issue and never did mean to. All I'm saying is there were problems with some units and personally I am glad I waited because I wouldn't want the risk of dealing with that. It's good that the crashes are getting patched

Ah the grip! I thought you meant the joycons on the Switch. Use your thumb as a liver as you pull it out, and it is easy to slide it out. You just need to know the trick. Nintendo should put it in the manual. But yea, it should not happen. It should not be able to slide in. Well at least it is not as bad as the Samsung Note pen story, where if you put it on reverse the phone breaks.

I remember watching a tech stream and a guy was talking about that story and ended up getting his pen stuck cause he didn't think it would happen and it would be that easy to do. He thought it was gonna be harder to get it stuck but he just slid it in and lo and behold... xD

So, you had to buy a graphics card based on the games you wanted to play to get the best experience on those games.

 

Today, that is no longer the case. Nintendo said that many times, that they don't want to do a standard home console as they have nothing to differentiate over the others. That was the case with the GameCube. And it Nintendo IP didn't help. So they go with unique experience which seems to be going well for them so far, but limited by technology limitation and price of things (and let's not talk about how Nvidia chips aren't cheap).

 

Nintendo picked the right chip though. Standard chip, no custom design things which third party devs just don't care, don't even want to look at those anymore (see WiiU, and that console sold well at launch). ARM chip compilers are now good, powerful, lots of debugging tools, and optimizes well code for the devs, thanks to smartphones. The GPU features every feature that a desktop GeForce graphics card can do. No cut down model. Meaning it gets full OpenGL support with Vulkan support (and technically DirectX if it was running Windows). Plus it has all the powerful Nvidia dev tools + Nintendo own tools which, unlike before, are plentiful for third party devs (based on what is said), and lots of supports for not only big publishers but indies and everything in between.

Sad to see this happening, hopefully it will be sorted out in the next year or two(along with the joycon problems) before I commit to buying one.

Joycon problem (which I assume you mean the connection issue) has been solved for the "few" (based on Nintendo) that has the problem. People are not reporting problem anymore after getting a replacement of their left joycon when they shipped it in., and now the right and left joycons has the same signal strength/reception, based on their observation when they got the left one back.

Good to know, Hopefully the bending issue is a relatively easy fix too. I'm not planning on getting a switch for a long time  so they have plenty of time to get it sorted if they even bother. If they dont fix it then hopefully its just an issue that manifests in docked mode, since I dont plan on ever using it in docked mode if i get one then it wouldnt be an issue.

I don't believe this for one second, unless you were trying to bend it it will not bend (I've tried to flex mine since I have an accident warranty and it didn't bend), as for the heat it only runs hot in docked mode in my experience and less hot than most laptops I've seen and the last tablet I've touched so......as far as I'm concerned this is bs

Nope, 3 pictures posted here but reddit is full of users saying they have this issue too.

 

Samsung cover exploding phones under warranty, Apple cover bending iphones under warranty yet both were huge stories so I don't see how that's relevant at all. If Switches are bending then Nintendo dropped a bollock when designing the thing. Its yet another clear example of the rushed and as cheap as possible design philosophy Nintendo had when designing it.

I don't believe anyone in the tech industry, WCCFtech is has tech reporters after all and look what credibility they have, I have never even heard of the place he published this on, the only thing I can trust is myself. I attempted to bend it, it would not bend (granted I could have bended it by other means but that would be unreasonable since I could bend pretty much any device that way), heat alone isn't bending it in that manner given its sitting upright not leaning over the edge of a table or something, if it was going to warp from heat while docked it would be in the other axis given the way it sits in the dock.

Simple I see what is happening and take everything that is speculative with a grain of salt (or in many cases a mountain given the clickbait), and if I have reason to not believe something then I simply dismiss it until I have undeniable proof to the contrary.

Heuuuummmm.. just want to say that doesn't mean it is on the WAN show that that it is legit, and many mistakes are said. WAN show is more of a talk show, not the place to get your only source of information. Its more, there is some news, and Luke and Linux give their opinion on it, there is usually no research done beside a quick read. If there is a piece of news that interest you in the WAN show, I would recommend to look deeper in it. As we are talking about the Switch, an example, if I recall correctly, Luke said that the console output in 720p while docked.

Granted, it's not as big an issue on a gaming console where you'll mostly use the performance cores but all these factors result in a lot of extra heat and also some wasted space that could probably have been used to better distribute the heat throughout the chip. 

 

What that being said: Nintendo should have picked someone else for the chip or demanded a better product at a similar price.

Yeah to me this is entirely entertainment at this point, Linus and Luke are funny and at times informative but overall they are a show and fun to watch, hence why I watch.

Well, it is hard to say "leftover", as it is currently the latest Nvidia Tegra SoC for non-cars. If not, I would imagine that the Nvidia Shield TV would get the newer SoC.

Yup.. then again my phone has the 810, and I guess Microsoft was the only one to figure out in putting a heatpipe on it to solve its problem. :P But yes. Tegra chip is not a cool operating chip.

Well, it is marked as "custom", so something changed. This is all I can think about, at least at the moment:

  • The Tegra chip supports 3GB of RAM. Nvidia Tegra X1 chip that Nintendo got supports 4GB. Either a minor hardware change/fix was done to allow this, or Nvidia charges more to unlock the RAM limitation which is kept for (or at least the initial idea): Higher end model.
  • A or some Pascal firmware level tech (like maybe the memory compression), was past to the Tegra X1. to get the most performance possible out of the chip.

    Both cases would shows 0 differences in the X-Ray images.

Nha. A53 chip would not been used in any case. The Tegra chip core design was really a switch system. Either A53 or A57. I don't see the A53 being used by demanding games to reduce system heat by devs, same for Nintendo themselves... Nvidia advertised that the chip would use the A53 for the phone/tablet main screen, general navigation, and video/music playing. And switch to teh A57 for everything else.

Like who? So far, even the Snapdragon 835 doesn't have full OpenGL support. It has OpenGL ES support only. Plus they have virtually 0 tools for the GPU nor provide or have experience providing assistance/support to any devs.

Just like with phones bending, what do these people do that causes that? You can get away with saying you put your phone in your pocket and sit down but a switch (with controllers) is huge. But Nintendo quality control is garbage IMO. Got 3 3DSs in the house and they all look different screen wise (because they use different panels randomly), one has a yellow tint, and one has dirt under the screen. Not surprised with this bend situation and all the other things like dead pixels, etc. people are reporting on the switch.
